BASIC FUNCTION:

Receives general supervision from the Electrical Supervisor to perform journeyperson level skilled electrical work in the repair, alteration, construction, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment; and perform related duties as assigned. Exercises technical guidance over electrician assistants.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below (E). ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Install, troubleshoot, test and repair of motors, control circuits, conduits and duct systems, light and power circuits appliances, generators, fans, heaters, fixtures, radiant heat boilers, transformers, switchgear, distribution/subpanels, branch circuits, BAS systems for lighting and exhaust fans and fire alarm systems, (E)

Analyze load size circuits, raceways, and panel capacities and read blue print schematics. (E)

Install necessary interior and exterior wiring for equipment and appliances. (E)

Wire new and altered buildings. (E)

Replace fuses and breakers (E)

Install, troubleshoot, test and repair fire alarm system. Verify signal and produce alarm receiver signals and reports.

Install, test, and maintain storage batteries. (E)

Assemble, troubleshoot, repair and replace lighting fixtures and their control systems. (E)

Lay out work to be done, calculate loads to provide additional supply of power in compliance with National Electric Code (NEC) and District Standard Specifications. (E)

Troubleshoot, repair and install electric gates systems. (E)

Install and maintain the electrical distribution supplying power of HVAC equipment. (E)

Supply power and assist with troubleshooting, repairs and testing of elevators, chairlifts and cargo lifts. (E)

Troubleshoot, repair install pumps and clocks for irrigation systems. (E)

Troubleshoot, repair, install and test generators and fire pumps. (E)

Attend advanced training, train other staff (E)

Maintain records on work performed. (E)

Maintain inventory of stock. (E)

Determine supply needs. (E)

Maintain regular and prompt attendance in the work place.

OTHER DUTIES:

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Standard practices, materials, equipment and tools of the electrical trade;

  • Design, construction, installation, and maintenance of electrical apparatus and equipment together with skill in performing electrical installation and repair work;

  • National Electric Code and the Electrical Safety Orders and Codes of the State of California.

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Field Engineering and common construction practice related to the electrical field.

ABILITY TO:

  • Make operating repairs to electrical machinery and equipment;

  • Competency in print reading

  • Follow oral and written instructions; work from plans and specifications;

  • Read and write at the level required for successful performance on the job;

  • Diagnose and identify electrical problems;

  • Keep records accurately and neatly;

  • Assist in estimating, job costs, ordering supplies, and keeping inventory;

  • Assist in overseeing the work of electrical contractors;

  • Physical capability sufficient to perform job tasks.

  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Carry out oral and written directions; write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described.

  • Operate a computer and knowledge of basic operating programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to a high school graduation Plus completion of a minimum of four years of classroom and field work in a certified technical school or state indentured apprenticeship program totaling a minimum of six years of experience as a construction and/or maintenance electrician.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.

Indoor and outdoor work environment.

Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.

As required must wear protective devices such as earplugs, dust mask, coveralls, gloves, safety boots and safety glasses.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employee in this position must have/be able to:

  • Lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs at waist height for short distances.

  • Occasionally lift and/or carry up to 94 lbs at waist height for short distances.

  • Occasionally lift 50 lbs overhead for short distances.

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of trade tools.

  • Walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.

  • See to perform assigned duties.

  • Push/pull up to 100 lbs. at shoulder height.

  • Bend at the waist, kneel, crawl, crouch and stoop.

  • Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.

  • Climb ladders and work from heights.

  • See, hear and speak with/without assistive devices sufficient to communicate effectively with others.

HAZARDS

  • Working in trenches.
