The person hired into this position will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of all technical aspects of the Fire Protection Systems supporting our engineers, technical, and skilled labor personnel as well as our test and plant facilities. The Fire Protection Engineer will be assigned to support research, operations, and facility management activities across the complex. The FPE will support the implementation of AEDC’s comprehensive fire prevention/protection program which is designed to reduce the threat of fire and related perils to life, the AF mission, property, and the environment, while complying with the Department of Defense (DoD) requirements.
Job Duties:
  • Directly supports the function of facilities Fire Systems and back-up to other Civil Engineering (CE) facility systems support
  • Ensures all regulatory requirements are complied with and all NFPA, OSHA and UFC codes and regulations are met
  • System Engineer role to review, plan and program the maintenance, repair and replacement of Fire systems
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications
  • Evaluate system condition, update system records and maintain and update records of Fire system issues, projects and solutions
  • Attends and participates in Capital Projects Requirements Reviews and Design Reviews for all projects involving Fire systems
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and execution of common work processes and procedures within mechanical / aeronautical engineering across the TOS contract
  • Ensures all records and requirements are performed in the Builder System Asset Management system for Fire systems
  • Generate and update detailed operations and maintenance work instructions, guidelines, procedures, and checklists
  • Develop and maintain an effective preventive maintenance and asset management program for assigned systems
  • Interface / collaborate with other engineering disciplines, project managers, craft supervision and planners / schedulers, to ensure that the systems they are responsible for are ready to run properly when required and that maintenance outages are planned, coordinated, and properly scheduled
  • Provide technical guidance to craft personnel in setup, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and removal of systems
  • Performs direct oversight of service contract vendors, develops statements of work and approves invoices
  • Review design documents of equipment manufacturers or subcontractors of a moderate to advanced degree of complexity and prepares comments and recommendations
  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy
  • Perform other related duties as required
Basic Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited college or university plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • Current United States Citizenship
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience and knowledge of fire systems, controls and maintenance
  • Good knowledge of major industry or regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to the mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with flexibility to accomplish mission objectives
  • Good interpersonal skills, to include both oral and written communication
  • Experience interpreting and applying NFPA code requirements and standards and the ability to develop, propose, and implement defendable risk-based decisions related to fire safety issues
  • Fire protection certification or license with knowledge of NFPA, OSHA and UFC
  • Familiarity with large industrial complex and turbine and rocket test cells, wind tunnels, space chambers, and/or arc heater facilities is desirable
  • Work experience as or alongside skilled labor trades
  • Active DOD security clearance
