Job Summary:

The electrical journeyman is responsible for repairing and maintaining all types of electrical systems and equipment - to include panel boards, breakers, fuses, circuits and overload conditions, lighting controls, electronic controls and circuit boards. Other duties will include repairing and maintaining all types of motors and motor controllers - to include bearings, seals and motor leads, end bells and shafts, variable speed motor drives, troubleshooting motors.

Electrical journeyman performs other assigned duties related to operations, maintenance and renovations to buildings and equipment such as preventive maintenance; light duty carpentry, painting, electrical, and other miscellaneous repairs and maintenance activities; and respond to emergency and urgent work.

Some irregular and extra hours as needed for projects and emergencies. Emergencies frequently involve difficult working conditions. This may require work during nonbusiness hours which include nights, evenings and when the University is closed.

Environmental Hazards:

Noise, working in rain, snow, dusty and windy conditions. Working in heat of summer and cold of winter. Working with electrical voltages on ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and within cramped areas and confined spaces. Work may be conducted in tunnels, in cramped areas and in confined spaces that may be dusty or noisy. Work may also be done in various weather conditions such as rain, snow, wind, heat and cold.

Must use appropriate personal protective equipment as required (gloves, respirator, arc flash apparel, safety glasses, etc.)

Physical Requirements:

This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school/GED

  • Three (3) years of previous electrical work experience

  • Valid driver's license

  • Unlimited electrical journeyman license;

or,

  • Equivalent experience as an apprentice to obtain a license within the first year of employment;

or,

  • Limited electrical license with the ability to get an unlimited license within the first year of employment

Skills, Proficiencies, and Knowledge:

Working on ladders and heights, variable speed drive repair, electrical calculations, interpretation of National Electric Code.

Preferred:

  • Two (2) years of technical/trading school

  • Three (3) years of prior successful maintenance work experience involving motor repair, electronics, troubleshooting controls, and lighting in the building trades or technical field at a university, commercial or industrial building maintenance organization
