THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Pacifica is a beautiful coastal community, just south of San Francisco with an exciting opportunity. We are currently hiring for an Electrical Instrumentation Technician I/II to join our team. This position will perform basic electrical and instrumentation duties for the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

BASIC EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform basic electrical and instrument repairs and maintenance duties;

  • Assist in the maintenance, repair alteration, and installation of a variety of electrical and instrumentation systems and equipment.

  • Use measuring, calibrating, and testing instruments and hand power tools common to the trade.

  • Maintain record on equipment maintenance and perform preventative maintenance on equipment.

  • Coordinate emergency maintenance with system operation.

  • On occasion serve as an operator in the operations of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES - Electrical Instrumentation Technician I

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Knowledge of standard hand and power tools.

  • Knowledge of basic electrical theory and mechanical principles highly desirable.

Licenses:

  • Must possess a valid Class C California driver's license at time of appointment.

  • Possession, or ability to obtain within two years of appointment, a voluntary certificate as an Electrical/Instrumentation Technician I as issued by the California Water Environment Association.

  • Possession, or ability to obtain within two years of appointment a grade I certificate issued by the California Water Resources Control Board.

  • Possession of Class B or A driver license is highly desirable.

Abilities/Knowledge:

The identification and use of standard hand and power tools and of materials, terms, practices and equipment of the electrical trade; arithmetic and mechanical principles as related to shop and field work. Ability to learn to interpret and work from shop drawings and electrical diagrams; learn to perform work which requires considerable manipulative skills, mechanical comprehension, mathematical calculations, and logical reasoning; use some independent judgment and initiative; acquire increased job knowledge and skills; understand and carry out verbal and written instruction; keep standard records and make simple verbal or written reports of work performed; learn and perform shop mathematics with accuracy; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and learn and apply safe work practices.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES - Electrical Instrumentation Technician II

Knowledge of: Wastewater system using supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA); pump, well and valve stations; theory and practice of the principles of electricity including systems up to 480 volts, electronics, computer systems, pneumatics, hydraulics. Practices used in the installation, testing, calibration, maintenance and repair of process control systems; occupational hazards and safety precautions related to work; maintenance and repair of test instruments.

Ability to:

  • Safely perform highly sensitive calibration and maintain high standards of quality control and reliability in instrument systems and loops.

  • Perform thorough troubleshooting on critical systems and equipment in constant and hard use, researching instrumentation problems and providing solutions, which meet the need for 24-hour reliability.

  • Work independently without supervision.

  • Train Operators and Maintenance personnel to recognize, describe and provide timely reports of symptoms of instrument malfunctions.

  • Establish and maintain cordial working relationships with others; attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Experience:

Eighteen months of experience as Electrical Instrument Technician I or equivalent and knowledge of fundamental electrical theory and techniques, usually attainable through the Electrical Technician I classification.

Certificates/Licenses:

  • Possession, or ability to obtain within one year of appointment, a voluntary certificate as an Electrical/Instrumentation Technician II as issued by the California Water Environment Association.

  • Possession, or ability to obtain within three years of appointment a grade I certificate issued by the California Water Resources Control Board.

  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License. Possession of Class B or A driver license is highly desirable.

Benefits

The City's comprehensive benefits package includes:

Holidays: Thirteen (13) days per year.

Vacation: From 11 to 27 days per year, depending on length of service.

Sick leave: Accrual is one day per month, with no limit on accrual.

Retirement: The City contracts with CalPERS to provide a retirement plan that utilizes the formula of 2.5% @ 55 for "Classic members" or 2% @ 62 for "PEPRA members." Classic Members contribute 8% employee contribution plus 2.5% employer cost share for a total contribution of 10.5%. PEPRA members pay 6.75% employee contribution plus 2.5% employer cost share for a total contribution of 9.25%.

Insurance: The City provides its employees with a medical insurance allowance that allows employees to purchase medical insurance through either Teamsters Union #856 Health and Welfare or CalPERS medical benefits plan. Some plans require employee contributions. Employees with proof of qualifying health insurance coverage through another group health plan may qualify for a "Health In-Lieu Payment" when declining city coverage.

The City contributes toward a dental insurance plan and vision plan for employee and all eligible dependents.

The City pays premiums for:

  • Life insurance premium in the amount of $30,000.

  • Long term disability insurance (to begin sixty days after onset of non-work-related illness or injury).

Training: The City will pay up to $2,000 per fiscal year toward the cost of books and tuition required as part of courses taken that are job-related.

Deferred Compensation: Employees may participate in a choice of three deferred compensation plans.

Union Membership: This position is represented by the Teamsters Local 856, Miscellaneous Unit.
