Performs skilled plan review and inspection work for the City of Bryan to ensure compliance with city ordinances, national and international electrical codes, and regulations governing the installation and operation of electrical systems and equipment.
Essential Job Functions
Inspects new and existing wiring and electrical installations in commercial and residential buildings; enforces compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations; recommends modifications and adjustments as necessary.
Reviews new construction and remodeling plans for compliance with applicable electrical codes and regulations, and with city ordinances.
Contacts property owners to order compliance to codes when deficiencies on infractions are noted.
Notifies property owners of acceptance of code compliance
Keeps records and prepares reports as required.
Inspects electrical systems following fires and determines the work required to restore systems to safe operating condition.
Investigates complaints of dangerous wiring and orders the correction of defects found.
Performs related duties as required.
Responds regularly and promptly to work.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED; preferably with some advanced course work in a related field.
At least five (5) years of work experience in a construction/development related field, with at least two (2) years directly related to the electric industry.
Equivalent combinations of education, experience, certification, and training may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
Complex principles and techniques of electrical inspections.
Principles of electrical design and engineering mathematics.
Residential and commercial electrical installations, materials and methods of construction.
Safety standards and methods of building construction for residential/commercial, industrial and residential buildings.
Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Ability to:
Apply electrical codes and ordinances adopted and enforced by the City, including currently adopted Electrical codes and Zoning Ordinance.
Read and interpret complex building plans, specifications, and building codes.
Determine if construction systems conform to City code requirements.
Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques to examine workmanship and materials.
Advise on standard construction methods and requirements for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
Enforce regulations fairly, firmly, factually, and with proper public relations skills.
Organize workload, establish priorities, meet established deadlines, and follow up on assignments with minimum direction.
Maintain accurate and interrelated technical and computerized records.
Make mathematical computations rapidly and accurately.
Take the initiative to learn individual job tasks and continue to broaden knowledge levels by willingly accepting new responsibilities and attending training to advance skills.
Exercise considerable initiative, sound judgment, and collaborative skills.
Handle multiple tasks, prioritize and organize work assignments, and meet established deadlines.

Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements
Texas Class C driver's license with a good driving record as measured by the City's evaluation system.
Must possess a Texas Electrician License at the Journeyman level or higher issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
Physical Demands
Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, crawling, climbing, and using hands and fingers to operate equipment and to lift or move objects up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions
Work is performed both in office and outdoor settings. Outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments and construction sites. There will be exposure to inclement weather, temperature extremes, mechanical parts & equipment, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, moving mechanical parts, electrical/mechanical hazards, noise, vibration, dust, pollen, fumes, gases, odors and/or other airborne particles.
Equipment
Work shall be performed with tools, appliances and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
Equipment may include but is not limited to: phone, computer, printer, fax, copier, scanner, calculator, two-way radio, amp probe, hand tools, ladders, and vehicle.
