Electrical Engineering Intern - Available Summer 2019

During your internship at Arup, you'll have the chance to work with some of the most highly respected engineers and specialists in the world. Responsibilities of this specific role will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Electrical load calculations

  • Assign circuitry for Power and Lighting devices

  • Report writing

  • Work on projects using 3D AutoCAD

  • Give structure to ideas lots of "taking a first pass" at spreadsheets, reports and analyses for discussion later rather than instruction

  • Attend meetings and learn from listening, asking questions and discussion

  • Work with people from other disciplines and/or vendors to gain knowledge on new subjects

  • Attend meetings - listen, ask questions. Be involved in discussions with other disciplines and Architects to gain knowledge & experience

Qualifications

Required:

  • Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Bachelor's Degree in Architectural Engineering (BSAE)

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA or higher

  • BSEE: coursework in electrical power systems design, control systems, electric machines

  • BSAE: coursework in building systems design and electrical power systems design

  • BSAE: Demonstrated interest in the electrical engineering industry with an emphasis on the power side of the discipline

  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Work and Excel

  • Skills in planning and organizing

  • Ability to communicate thoughts and technical ideas in an accessible way, both in person and in writing

  • Attitude of taking independent initiative, exhibiting creative problem-solving, eagerness to learn, while remaining dedicated to teamwork

Preferred:

  • Working towards a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering

  • 3.5 GPA or higher

  • EIT/ FE certification

  • BSEE: coursework in building systems design

  • BSAE: coursework focusing on specialties within the construction side of the electrical engineering industry

  • Internship experience in a consulting firm with emphasis on electrical design

  • Academic research or testing with relevant focus

  • Membership in IESNA, NFPA, IEEE

  • Demonstrated interest in sustainability as evidenced by extracurricular activities, etc

  • Academic research, coursework, or other experience with alternative energy systems and other technologies new to the construction industry

  • Experience with AutoCad, Revit MEP, Autodesk MEP, Microsoft Visio, PowerPoint, or Project

  • Proven ability to perform in a deadline situation

  • Past history of technical presentations and technical writing, knowledge sharing with peers

  • Evidence of teamwork and leadership such as professional accomplishment or honor society

Your Opportunity You will draw on your buildings engineering skills and industry experience to consistently produce project deliverables that meet project requirements and project manager and client expectations. Your work will consist of advanced electrical design for the built environment including, but not limited to, power and lighting systems and the use of digital practice technology; such as Revit and AutoCAD, and electrical engineering specific computer applications. Your Key Responsibilities * With limited direction from a project manager and/or Professional Engineer, design electrical systems for the built environment. * Apply strong electrical engineering skills and knowledge to produce accurate and timely deliverables. * Develop and prepare design documentation in written and computer-aided design formats to meet project and client requirements. * Prepare required calculations to meet project requirements. * Share knowledge with more junior designers by serving as a trainer and resource. * Collaborate with project managers, engineers and other team members as part of a coordinated design team. * Develop efficient and accurate solutions to design problems. * Research, prepare, and present coordinated design options. * Review drawings and research electrical and safety code issues to comply with national, city, state, and county regulations. * Interact with clients and project stakeholders. * Communicate with manufacturers and contractors to address challenges and develop practical designs. * Provide contract documents that meet required codes and quality assurance standards. * Resolve design conflicts and questions and provides recommendations to address issues and add value. * Understand and work within project budgets and schedules to help project manager meet project financial and schedule goals. * Provide construction administration support such as reviewing contractor RFIs and submittals, perform construction observation and punch lists, review contractor change requests. Your Capabilities and Credentials * Knowledge of power systems; voltage drop, short circuit, and building load calculations. * Strong electrical design knowledge for the built environment including but not limited to power, lighting, device layouts, circuiting, panel schedules and load calcs, riser diagrams, and schedules. * Ability to prepare and review detailed electrical design drawings with minimal supervision. * Ability to integrate design elements with architectural, civil, structural, ICT, mechanical and other disciplines to deliver a coordinated, constructible design. * Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards. * Knowledge of specialty engineering applications such as SKM Power Tools. * Ability to apply logic, reasoning, and organizational skills to structure concepts and ideas into deliverables. * Ability to demonstrate a credible and trustworthy presence through professionalism and demeanor. * Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare and present accurate, professionally written reports and recommendations. * Strong knowledge of California Title 24 lighting requirements * Professional experience in electrical design for the laboratories, healthcare and higher education. * Familiarity with various construction delivery processes such as Design Build. * Familiarity with and ability to apply sustainable design principles within projects. * Knowledge of specialty electrical or lighting calculation applications such as AGI 32 and Visual. * Knowledge of fire alarm systems. * Knowledge about creating and editing technical specifications * Familiarity Building Information Modeling (BIM) software and CAD; in particular Revit MEP and Autocad MEP. * Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and 5-10 years of experience with California engineering consulting firms, or equivalent combination of education and experience. EIT certification preferred. LEED Associate or LEED AP. Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
