What You'll Do

  • Report to the Manager for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

  • Provide basic designs of offices, classrooms, and labs, under the guidance from a senior engineer. Manage several small projects of relatively short duration.

  • Provide drawing and specification documentation for power, lighting, fire alarm, and auxiliary systems for in-house design projects which meet all project applicable building, state and federal fire and health codes. Layout equipment and systems, perform engineering calculations such as load, short circuit, and arc flash, and select equipment and devices with support from lead engineers or the electrical engineering manager. Write standards and technical specifications. Coordinate the design with all AEC design disciplines and other U-M partners.

  • Perform field surveys in mechanical, electrical, and other building spaces to document existing electrical systems and to understand building interferences. You will assess condition and performance of systems and components. Develop recommendations for alterations to buildings and infrastructure based on the findings of field surveys and evaluations.

  • Meet and communicate with facility managers, professors, researchers, and other partners to develop project goals. Consult with the electrical engineering manager and other office leadership to determine resource allocation needs and to provide project updates. Assist and direct drafters to accomplish project tasks and supporting office priorities.

  • Review designs with appropriate agencies to ensure compliance with codes and regulations. Administer RFIs and construction bulletins for design revisions. You will review and process shop drawings and help resolve construction issues.
