SUMMARY

The candidate will work closely with a team of electrical, mechanical, chemical, aerospace, and materials engineers, as a technical project leader in state-of-the-art research and development (R&D) at CRGs Power and Energy Center in Dayton, Ohio. This will involve understanding customer requirements, developing execution plans, executing to meet project objectives, and measuring progress against cost, schedule and performance requirements. Problem solving is inherently multi-disciplinary and the ability to work within multiple teams simultaneously while pursuing multiple technical objectives is a daily requirement. Strong communication skills are needed for report and proposal writing, internal and external presentations, and daily coordination within the team. The environment is fast-paced, but highly flexible with many exciting problem-solving opportunities and room to define future areas of technical growth for the organization.

  • Area of Responsibility - Principal investigator, project execution, project management, preparing and delivering presentations, report and proposal writing, customer management
  • Complexity (knowledge / technological) - Projects involve many disciplines: power conversion, power management, sensors, equipment controls, electronics, software and hardware development, PCB design and development, embedded systems design, micro controller programming and design, and data acquisition
  • Complexity (product diversity) - Full spectrum R&D: concept development, systems software and hardware solutions, design, prototype fabrication, and testing of materials, components, and systems
  • Staff (Service) - No supervisory responsibilities are anticipated.

Requirements

  • Exclusive US citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance is required.
  • Minimum BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years experience in research, product development, engineering project management, or project leadership job function in the aerospace and defense industry, or power electronics industry.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

To perform the job successfully an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

Project management: Demonstrate responsibility for quality, cost management, and on-time delivery. At a minimum, applicants will need to manage tasks or specific statements of work within a program. Past experience in the following areas is preferred: government contract management, customer interface, and proposal and grant writing.

Problem Solving: Convert complex problems to discreet solvable action items. Use innovation and creativity to resolve difficult issues. Work independently and within a team.

Analysis: Understand drawings, technical literature, manufacturing processes, system specifications, and other customer requirements. Handle data sets and accurately summarize results for rapid dissemination.

Design: Implement new technology from concept through detailed design with particular emphasis on circuit design and the integration of custom circuits into power system platforms. Refine concepts based on experiments and resulting data analysis. Document specifications enabling others to execute a detailed plan. Communicate concepts effectively to others from technicians through program managers. Demonstrate proficiency in electrical power systems design, PCB design, embedded systems, micro controller software development (C/C++, ect.), communication protocol (SPI, I2C, UART, and CAN) and hardware troubleshooting. Specific experience with any of the following is a plus: battery management systems, power conversion systems, CAN communication.

Lab experience: Provide engineers and technicians with specific tasks, in support of big picture technical objectives. Pay careful attention to detail and maintain creativity. Work independently with little supervision. Use hand tools, power tools, personal protection equipment (PPE), and work in a common, mixed-use space with other users. Specific experience with any of the following is a plus: Battery pack and systems development, high power electronics, hybrid power systems, battery management systems, DC/DC converters, AC/DC converters, DC/AC inverters, circuit design (analog and digital), and electronics assembly.
