Our client is a world leading manufacturer of commercial transit vehicles that has been in business for over 100 years-Due to major growth, they have an immediate need for an electrical engineer with power distribution background.

Engineering position is responsible for engineering design and support. Duties involve engineering assistance, problem resolution and other engineering duties in support of the design and manufacturing of specific components and simple sub-systems. This person will have direct influence at the part level to optimize the piece parts and simple sub-systems. This position reports to the Engineering Supervisor, but may also get direction/guidance from senior engineers. This is a direct, full-time position
Technical Focus

Discuss and communicate customer, product, regulatory and other functional requirements related to all vehicle electrical systems with internal and external customers
Work with sensor, motor, actuator, cable, harness and systems suppliers to configure and optimize vehicle functions such as: Starting and Charging, High Voltage Battery Integration, HV and LV motor operation, vehicle sensing, signaling and lighting
Verify power distribution system on vehicle or in laboratory. Modify wiring, device selection, device interface, circuit protection, harnessing and overall system arrangement to ensure compatibility with other vehicle devices, powertrains, HVAC systems and user interfaces
Experience with ESD, Ground Lift and High Potential Testing is a plus
Hands on experience with high voltage electric machines is a plus
Thorough understanding of power requirements, electrical device technologies, grounding strategies, routing management and circuit protection requirements
Expertise in one or more of the following areas is necessary:


Vehicle High Voltage Power Distribution System
Vehicle Low Voltage Power Distribution System
Vehicle Electrical Grounding
Circuit Protection and Isolation
Electric Machines, Switches, Sensors, Motors and Actuators
High- and Low-Voltage Harnessing

Responsibilities:
Can communicate subsystem level design/idea to internal/external customers
Evaluates customer product requirements and develops product designs to meet customer needs
Interpret customer requirements, and map requirements onto existing designs when possible, and/or develop new designs when needed
Optimize designs via analytical, numerical and/or empirical assessments, create electrical models/analysis to insure product requirements are met
Produce and/or evaluate possible design solutions to improve cost, quality, delivery and performance on specialized knowledge of engineering applications together with possible involvement of other functional engineers and/or customer/supplier personnel
Release drawings, Bills of Materials (BOM) and other project documentation to support production cost estimation and prototype quotes
Review CAD models and drawings at the component and sub system level to ensure their integrity
Conceptualize appropriate mechanical & electrical design including design for manufacture and assembly
Documentation of final design upon the successful development of component and simple subsystem, which includes releasing the final technical specification, related design calculation, and the design manual or guideline
Design and document solutions, within the scope of concepts, for components and modules, taking project guidelines (e.g. safety, quality, costs, weights and dates) into consideration
Advise stakeholders on the technical issues that affect the product design, production cycle-time & cost
Analyze assignments and determine engineering specifications which must be fulfilled for problems or projects
Support production ramp & ongoing/continuous product/process improvement
Perform and coordinate laboratory testing of prototypes for sub system characterization
Work with the test engineer(s) to create DVP&R, execute the defined test plan and review the test results/reports
Conduct field testing and provide preliminary evaluations
Develop and maintain the technical specification for desired performance at the sub system level
Ability to prioritize assigned tasks to maintain schedule
Works independently on assigned subsystem tasks with some guidance required from senior engineers on sub system level tasks
Works productively with other engineers, designers, technicians, sales representatives, installers, and project managers so the project is delivered on schedule and on budget
Provide technical design support to sales, product engineering, manufacturing, and quality organizations
Provide technical guidance to junior engineers at component and subsystem level
Organize design review with the manufacturing engineer team as well as project review with the management team to make sure product development completion on time
Support purchasing, field service and other internal customers as required
Lead or support prototype order and procurement
Operate in a team environment and provide input to design solution during the design development phase
Apply knowledge of company products, policies and practices to provide economies through standardization of parts and products.
Apply lean principles in designs and processes at the subsystem level
Continually develops individual analytical skills and is also knowledgeable about the best tools and methods to analyze a given design problem and develop a good understanding of design risk factors. (Pre req for DFMEA line above)
Exhibits insight and electrical design sense to develop and meet design requirements with product designs that are manufacturable, cost-efficient, reliable, and better than the competition.
Hands on troubleshooting of vehicle systems
Lead Root Cause Analysis
Makes sound decisions after careful deliberation of the alternatives and will revisit prior decisions as justified by new information
Released designs are cost effective, manufacturable, serviceable, meet all performance objectives, and meet customer requirements
Supports design decisions with detailed analyses

Qualifications:

Understanding and application of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
Understanding of automotive electrical systems and functions and ability to read and produce engineering drawings
Application of sound electrical design fundamentals
Working knowledge in electrical power distribution including AC and DC systems
In-depth knowledge of the electrical load calculation and circuit protection
Experienced with high voltage system design and necessary safety guidelines
Experienced in generating harnesses and electrical schematics using CAD software
Familiarity with automotive components such as circuit breakers, relays, and wiring, etc.
Familiarity with automotive industry standards such as SAE, NFPA, FMVSS, etc.
Familiarity with manufacturing processes and environment
Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot automotive electrical systems
Bachelors Degree Engineering required
Minimum 5 years of engineering experience

This is a large and growing program in the early phases of development, with a wide range of roles and responsibilities for a talented engineer. The individual will be involved in systems and component engineering efforts spanning from conceptual-design studies, to feasibility/cost studies, to full scale engineering design, qualification, and production efforts. The individual will interact routinely with personnel across multiple SNL organizations, as well as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), production agencies throughout the NNSA nuclear security enterprise, and Department of Defense organizations. Specific responsibilities may include some or all of the following: * Development and verification of system and component requirements. * System electrical design, including system grounding development, system design for electromagnetic compatibility, digital communication and message set development, circuit analysis using SPICE, and component interface specifications, among other things. * System functional architecture development, including system state diagram development. * Integration of components within a system. * Development of qualification plans. * Development and execution of test plans. * System design trade studies. * Control Account Manager. * Prototype testing, including writing and running LabVIEW and TestStand code. * Technical interface with component designers. * Technical interface with production facilities. * Sandia representative on multi-organizational (i.e. NNSA, DoD, LLNL, SNL) project teams. The Weapon Systems Engineering Center is responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of U.S. nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through our nuclear strategic deterrent. The W80-4 System Integration Departments are comprised of a group of dedicated and motivated engineers with advanced technical degrees, primarily in mechanical and electrical engineering.
