Summary

This position class provides instrumentation and controls engineering discipline support for projects. The successful candidate will be assigned a classification (Engineer, Senior Engineer, Staff Engineer, Senior Staff Engineer, or Principal Engineer, in ascending order of responsibility) based on the competencies demonstrated.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops or adapts instrumentation and controls design standards for projects based on regulatory requirements, industry standards, and client requirements.

  • Designs instrumentation and controls for hydrocarbon plant projects, including the development of field and control room instrumentation specifications.

  • Develops applications of controls, instruments, and associated systems for commercial, petrochemical, and industrial uses.

  • Interfaces with other discipline engineers to determine instrumentation and controls specifications.

  • Coordinates the configuration of digital control systems (DCS) installations.

  • Provides input to project P& ID's.

  • Researches and analyzes data such as client design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.

  • Works with team members to develop project scopes of work, estimates, and/or schedules.

  • Develops major equipment and material selection, and construction specifications.

  • Ensures that all assigned activities and operations comply with applicable codes, regulations, and laws.

  • Provides support during fabrication and installation phases to ensure engineering documents are followed.

  • Coordinates activities with other project disciplines involved in fabrication, operation, application, and installation or repair of various materials, products, or systems.

  • Provides technical direction, support and information to other engineers, designers, and drafters.

  • Evaluates new technologies to improve existing systems and resolve process and safety problems.

  • Designs and implements online analyzers by determining the plant requirements, developing specifications, installing the analyzers, and evaluating the impact.

  • Develops and implements expert systems software by writing programs to run on DCS.

  • Demonstrates professional skills in structuring assigned activities, creativity, teamwork, communications, operational efficiencies, handling of a client's changing needs, decision making, and analyzing and solving problems.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Potential Assignments:

Depending on candidate competencies and interests, and available project work, I&C engineers could be assigned to provide fire and gas alarm and controls engineering, other Fire Protection Engineering work, or Electrical Engineering work. Candidates with Fire Protection and Electrical Engineering capabilities are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science or higher degree in Control Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline, from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum one (1) year directly related previous experience in the Oil & Gas industry.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of managers, client, or employees of organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Word processing software; Excel spreadsheet software; Outlook e-mail software; and any other discipline-specific design or analysis software, as required.

Certificates and Licenses:

The following are preferred and should be mentioned in candidate application if applicable, but are not required for candidate consideration:

  • EIT or FE certification.

  • Successful completion of Arctic Engineering course recognized by the State of Alaska AELS Board.

  • North Slope Alaska, Alaska, Arctic, Canadian, Cold Regions, Offshore Structures, and/or Petroleum Industry project experience.

  • Licensure as a Professional Control Systems, Electrical, Fire Protection Engineer by the State of Alaska.

  • ISA certifications in Instrumentation and Controls

  • NICET certifications in Fire Protection system design

  • Alaska State Fire Marshal fire system design permits

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

This position is based in our Anchorage, Alaska office . However, most of the work activities may be performed as work-from-home. We will consider allowing work-from-home from locations within the United States outside of the immediate environs of Anchorage Alaska contingent upon demonstration that communications connectivity and other work-from-home elements meet our needs. Travel for site visits and in-person meetings is expected to be extremely infrequent.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and work in high, precarious places while working in the field. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, although fieldwork is sometimes moderately noisy.

Although expected to be very infrequent, travel overnight (or longer) to remote work locations may be required.
