Job Title Electrical Engineer II

About the Role You will:

The selected candidate will perform end-to-end voltage budget analyses for HDD and SSD products. Voltage budgeting is a detail oriented process whereby the entire power distribution system is simulated to ensure critical voltage constraints will be satisfied in volume production over process and temperature extremes. A general HDD or SSD power distribution system consists of multiple voltage regulators, printed circuit board (PCB) and system-on-chip (SOC). Each component is first modeled and simulated individually to confirm basic operation. Components are then connected and the overall system simulated to identify any deficiencies in terms of voltages provided to the SOC. Should problems arise, arriving at a workable solution typically requires iterating across multiple factors. Reduced impedance PCB routing or improved decoupling may be necessary. In other instances, voltage regulator or SOC improvements may be mandated. In this role, you will take full ownership of the voltage budget process:

  • Work closely with stakeholders to identify key voltage constraints and generate component models

  • Create simulation environment with emphasis on model abstraction and reuse

  • Perform initial simulations to highlight issues and potential areas for improvement

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to obtain consensus on improvements and update models accordingly

  • Continue simulating and updating models until all voltage constraints are satisfied

  • Generate documentation detailing results and apprise stakeholders

About Our Group

This role resides in the Power Device Development group, which is part of the larger VLSI organization. In addition to voltage budgeting, the Power Device Development team has responsibility for integrated voltage regulator development; one of the primary elements in the voltage budgeting process.

About You

  • Possess strong grasp of fundamental analog principles

  • Self-starter and self-motivated

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams

Your Experience Includes:

  • Analog background with relevant voltage regulator (linear & switching) coursework or experience

  • Spice circuit modeling experience

  • Simulating linear and switching regulators to determine stability and transient response

  • Using behavioral Spice constructs to create abstracted sub-circuits

  • Importing text files for use as piece-wise linear stimulus

  • Post processing simulation results to extract desired data

  • Familiarity with one or more of the following a plus:

  • Filter analysis & design

  • Control systems

  • PCB design

  • Low voltage power distribution systems

  • Ability to prepare presentations using Microsoft tool suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Working knowledge of common test equipment (oscilloscope, function generator, network analyzer, etc.)

  • Bachelor's Degree and 3+ years of experience, preferred in Electrical Engineering.
