The Opportunity

At Roche, we are working to make next-generation sequencing simple and accessible enough for routine use. By accelerating clinical research, streamlining workflows, and expanding assay menus, we are broadening access to genomic data and lowering barriers to adoption. From robust sample isolation and preparation tools to novel sequencing technology and advanced bioinformatics, we are developing differentiated, highly integrated end-to-end solutions for next-generation sequencing, resulting in a sample in, result out workflow.

The Electrical Engineer II, within the Roche Sequencing Solutions Division, will contribute to the design, development, and integration of electrical subsystems for next generation sequencing systems and custom equipment. These systems consist of fluidic, mechatronic, pneumatic, thermal, and optical subsystems and play a critical role in highly automated DNA sequencing pipelines and other diagnostic applications.

  • You will define and refine requirements, generate system architecture, select and evaluate components, and design custom PCBAs and wiring harnesses.

  • You will oversee system level assembly, testing and troubleshooting.

  • You will develop firmware and/or working closely with firmware and software engineers on all bring-up and integration efforts.

This position is based on-site in Santa Clara, CA.

Who you are:

(Required)

  • You have a Bachelor's degree and/or an Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field along with 3+ years of relevant industry experience in electrical systems, PCBA design for life sciences instrumentation and/or automation equipment

  • You have a demonstrated understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals/concepts; you have knowledge of firmware architecture and how it ties into electrical system and control architecture

  • You have a demonstrated level of proficiency with OrCAD and Allegro, or similar; you have a demonstrated level of proficiency with all common electrical test and measurement equipment (DC Power Supply, Digital Multimeter, Oscilloscope, Power Analyzer); you have a proficiency in PCBA design for power distribution/regulation, analog signal acquisition and processing, serial communication and control of at least two of the following: Motion (stepper and/or BLDC servo motors), thermal (TECs, PID, thermistors, thermocouples, RTDs, cartridge heaters, etc.), fluidic/pneumatic (pumps, valves, solenoids, regulators, sensors) and optical (LEDs, detectors, sensors) control applications

Preferred:

  • You have experience with SPICE or a similar tool for simulations; experience with SolidWorks and/or similar mechanical CAD tool

  • You have experience with common communication protocols (CAN, RS232, RS485, I2C), their proper implementation, and associated challenges

  • You have experience with cable harness design tools and documentation (Arcadia, Lucidchart, RapidHarness, or similar). Experience with design control under ISO13485 and familiarity with IEC 60601/62304 standards

  • You have strong interpersonal skills: Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication and influencing skills: has built and cultivated important relationships both inside an organization and externally. Has proven abilities to influence internal partners and stakeholders, thought leaders, national advocacy organizations, national standard-setting bodies, and other relevant external parties. Seamlessly collaborates with colleagues/other parts of the organization.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Santa Clara, CA is $69,200 - $128,400. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.
