Job Description Summary

This entry level position will make immediate contributions to the team responsible for Plant Electrical Design, I&C Systems design, I&C Hardware design, and/or I&C Software design, while being technically mentored by a team of high performing engineers. The individual will work within an energetic team environment to perform complex problem solving to support a variety of applications for existing as well as new plants.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • The Engineer is responsible for the delivery of high-quality engineering designs. Work scope typically includes the following essential responsibilities:

  • Develop creative solutions and reduce complexity to create accurate and effective solutions for complex engineering problems.

  • Typical hardware activities will include preparing design specifications, electronic designs (including PLD/FPGA designs) , performing simulation/module testing, and integration testing of the design. Performing PLD/FPGA Code Reviews and verifications of Design Specifications and Reports

  • Typical I&C software activities is responsible for the delivery of high-quality engineering software.

  • Engage customers to define scope, review results, and discuss technical risks.

  • Work with the technical leader to establish an effective work plan, including time estimates, schedule estimates, requirements and work processes.

  • Apply engineering fundamentals and 1st order engineering principles to establish and/or confirm expected performance.

  • Provide clear and complete analysis documentation in accordance with GE engineering procedures.

  • Manage time effectively to provide quality deliverables within the expected project timeline. Communicate effectively to leadership the status of work activities

  • Effectively manage multiple priorities

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in electrical, computer or software engineering from an accredited college of university.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Background in power plant.

  • Experience with BWR technology.

  • Possess fundamental knowledge of BWR Systems and integrated plant response.

  • Honest and straightforward with a high level of personal integrity.

  • Demonstrate a strong personal commitment and determination.

  • Detail oriented and accountable for results.

  • Communicate with credibility and humility.

  • Display a strong drive for continuous improvement.

The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.</p><p>Scope of Position:</p><p>Corning's Advanced Manufacturing Technology group (AMT) is focused on aspects of manufacturing equipment across the following areas.</p><ul><li><p>Development/design</p></li><li><p>Industrialization</p></li><li><p>Procurement</p></li><li><p>Deployment, commissioning and startup This position is in the Fiber Capital Programs (FCP) department within the Advanced Manufacturing Technology group (AMT) and is focused on equipment deployment, commissioning, and startup. The position is for an Electrical/Controls Engineer to be a member of a project team and provide Electrical Engineering leadership in the building, installation, commissioning and startup of Corning Optical Communications manufacturing systems in the optical fiber and cable division. PLC code and SCADA/HMI development is not the primary function of this position. Programming skills could be utilized as opportunities arise within FCP and potentially within other functions outside of FCP.</p></li></ul><p>Day to Day Responsibilities:</p><ul><li><p>Provide electrical discipline leadership in the construction, test, installation, and debug of equipment systems at both domestic and international manufacturing sites.</p></li><li><p>Learn &amp; understand process &amp; equipment functions in area of responsibility, including system analog and digital I/O requirements, control sequence logic, fail safe states and recovery sequences.</p></li><li><p>Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated process equipment systems to plants on-time, on-budget and that satisfy performance measures.</p></li><li><p>Incorporate safety and risk analysis into equipment designs.</p></li><li><p>Assure quality and repeatability of processes and products.</p></li><li><p>Provide assistance in developing integrated industrial control systems for new manufacturing equipment and modification of existing equipment.</p></li><li><p>Work closely with the Technology Development, Manufacturing Engineering and Operations groups to industrialize and reduce cost of new equipment designs.</p></li><li><p>Assess condition and usability of existing equipment for fit and function with new installation plans.</p></li><li><p>Work with equipment vendors on build and acceptance of equipment.</p></li><li><p>Direct initial equipment set-up and debug up to the point of turnover to operations.</p></li><li><p>Develop and use project plans and timelines to achieve project goals without sacrificing safety, intellectual property or product quality. Adhere to all corporate, business unit and site guidelines.</p></li><li><p>Develop detailed process equipment installation plans and supervise contract trades groups during installation.</p></li><li><p>Develop and use mechanical and electrical start-up/debug checklists, drawings and process equipment documentation, including directing technicians on creating and using the documentation.</p></li><li><p>Supervise and provide direction to direct and contract engineers and technicians, internal maintenance, and outside contract trades.</p></li><li><p>Support troubleshooting for equipment and process issues during installation and start-up phases, identify root cause and implement long-term corrective actions.</p></li><li><p>Train plant engineers, technicians, maintenance and operations personnel on the manufacturing platform as part of the turnover to operations.</p></li></ul><p>Travel Requirements:</p><p>Typical travel can range from a few days to a few weeks during the project initiation phase. During the deployment phase of the project, travel may be full-time. Design, Development and/or Deployment phases typically range from 3-9 months but can extend to 1+ years. Travel will be required to Corning Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacturing sites in North Carolina (Concord, Winston-Salem, Hickory, Newton, and Wilmington) and overseas sites in India, China, and Europe.</p><p>Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:</p><p>40hrs+ M-F- overtime, adjusted hours and weekends may be required based on where the project is in the project life cycle.</p><p>Required Education:</p><p>BS Electrical Engineering or M.S Electrical Engineering degree with applicable co-op and/or internship experience</p><p>Required Years in area of experience:</p><p>5+ years manufacturing experience working with process and automation equipment</p><p>Required Skills:</p><ul><li><p>Familiar with installation and operation of manufacturing equipment.</p></li><li><p>Interpret electrical drawings and schematics to aid in troubleshooting.</p></li><li><p>Knowledge of power systems for 480VAC and below</p></li><li><p>Determines and recommends best solution from a series of alternatives within plant guidelines</p></li><li><p>Thoroughly carries out assignments to completion</p></li><li><p>Translates engineering solutions to requirements, then further to process and/or equipment designs which deliver required performance criteria</p></li><li><p>Works well with other disciplines (IT, Mechanical, and Process engineering) to fully understand manufacturing system functionality and design requirements</p></li><li><p>Self-starter and able to work in team environment</p></li><li><p>Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and can adjust to changing priorities.</p></li></ul><p>Desired Skills:</p><ul><li><p>Equipment or software experience preferred: AutoCAD®, AutoCAD Electrical, Windows, MS Office suite including Power Point, Excel, Word.
