Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE)

The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE) studies and maintains particle beam accelerators and performs world class X-ray science at Wilson Lab on Cornell University's main campus. CLASSE serves students, the public, and scientists from Cornell and around the globe. The research missions of this laboratory are in many respects unique in the world.

Who we are:

The Electronics group at CLASSE is a very dedicated team of engineers and technicians charged with the design, production, and maintenance of a vast amount of electronic control and power systems for the operation of all accelerators at the Wilson Lab complex. This team brings a tremendous amount of experience to the laboratory in the area of Accelerator system control.

We have an immediate opening for an Electrical Engineer (RSS II).

What you will do:

The Electrical Engineer will work with minimal guidance to provide electronic system support for all departments within the CLASSE organization. Primary duties:

  • Areas of design include some of the following: instrumentation, system control, equipment protection, power conversion, and data acquisition.

  • Designs utilize digital and analog electronic circuitry.

  • Perform maintenance and troubleshooting on existing accelerator equipment, often difficult-to-diagnose cases.

  • Oversee projects from concept to manufacture to installation.

  • The Engineer is part of a very diligent electronics team. Collaboration, communication, and teamwork are important.

  • Keep knowledge current on evolving electronics industry.

What you need:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, or B.S. in Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent education and experience.

  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience designing and implementing electronic systems: including digital and analog circuitry with low-level FPGA programming.

  • Experience using general electronic test equipment for day-to-day development and troubleshooting.

  • Experience with software packages for schematic design and circuit simulation.

What other experience is preferred (but not required):

  • RF circuit design experience.

  • Printed Circuit Board design experience.

  • Microprocessor or System on Chip design experience.

  • Mechanical design experience.

  • Good visual acuity and small-motor skills for the testing and assembly of modern high density electronic circuits.
