Position Description
The National Synchrotron Light Source II is an X-ray light source used by visiting researchers around the world, spanning industry, academia, government, to advance our knowledge in a wide range of scientific disciplines such as life sciences, quantum materials, energy storage, advanced materials science, physics, chemistry, and biology. From batteries and microelectronics to drug design and future quantum computers, NSLS-II enables its growing research community to study materials with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing cutting-edge capabilities.
NSLS-II Diagnostics and Instrumentation Group has an opening for an Electrical Engineering position. Reporting to the diagnostics group leader, the candidate will perform duties of an Engineer for the maintenance, upgrade, and testing, of diagnostics sub-systems in support of NSLS-II accelerator operations. This position will require close interaction with technicians, engineers and scientific staff. A main task will be to maintain the Beam Position Monitor (BPM) system, as well as providing support for various Diagnostics sub-systems, including development of next generation diagnostics systems, critical to accelerator operations, and will require ability to identify modes of failure and mitigate corrective action. Tasking will also include provision of engineering support for firmware, software and hardware development.
Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide engineering support for all aspects of accelerator beam position monitors and other beam diagnostics instrumentation.
Work with high level software programmers to develop support code and applications
Interface with technical experts from other groups to facilitate operations
Work with other engineers and technicians to achieve group goals
Debug and maintain the repair of existing hardware
Work planning in preparation for scheduled maintenance and shutdown activities
Maintain and implement safety practices and procedures applicable to daily activities
