Summary

Provides electrical engineering support to ensure reliable operations of refinery's electrical power distribution system. Performs condition monitoring, troubleshooting, root cause failure analysis and project support. Identifies long-term improvement opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides electrical engineering technical support to refinery departments. Troubleshoots and resolves electrical-related issues.

    Assists in design of high and low voltage electrical systems. Monitors electrical power distribution system. Maintains baseline appraisals of electrical capacity, identifying load flows, problem areas and areas of excess capacity. Monitors critical equipment analysis to identify reliability improvement opportunities.

  • Supports electrical systems modernization projects and capital projects through involvement in electrical system specifications, hardware and software design, testing, commissioning, training, and documentation.

  • Provides support through all phases of capital and expense projects. Participates in technical reviews to ensure detailed electrical engineering meets design specifications, codes and engineering standards. Assists team in Project Execution stage in completion of detailed design, construction and installation of facilities and equipment.

  • Provides engineering support for investigations on adverse incidents involving electrical system disturbances and electrical equipment failures. Ensures refinery compliance with Process Safety Management and Management of Change (MOC).

  • In conjunction with other engineers and Maintenance, assists in design and implementation of reliability-centered maintenance programs for critical electrical equipment. Advocates benefits of reliability practices and fosters integration into plant operations.

    Works with electricians and E&I technicians. Reviews procedure manuals for technical adequacy.

  • Works extended hours, including nights and weekends, in process operations environment and during periods of inclement weather. Accesses areas of refinery requiring use of stairs and/or ladders to inspect critical process and mechanical equipment. Responds to upset conditions during off-hours.

Experienced and Education

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in electrical engineering required.

  • Minimum 7 years electrical/instrument engineering experience in refining industry required.

This position is part of an Engineering Technical Ladder with multiple levels. The successful candidate will be placed at a level commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Ensures refinery process unit static and dynamic control objectives are met through tuning, development of control strategies and troubleshooting existing regulatory and multi-variable control configurations for continuous operations in refinery process units. Works with variety of departments including Operations, Process Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Economics & Planning and Maintenance as well as outside consultants and vendors. Key Responsibilities * Provides process control engineering support for refinery operations and capital projects using dynamic engineering techniques bringing time and frequency domains to normal engineering tools. Ensures process units behave as linearly and predictively as possible. Utilizes Bode plots, Nyquist diagrams, material and energy balances in tuning/troubleshooting and multi-variable control configurations for efficient and profitable operations in refinery process units. * Provides day-to-day support for multi-variable controllers to ensure model certainty throughout assigned refinery process units. Works with Processing Engineering, Economics & Planning and APC (advanced process control) team, where applicable, for solutions to moderate and more complex problems. * Stays abreast of latest control technology through attendance at technical seminars and technical training. * Provides capital and expense project support. Under general supervision, conducts feasibility and simulation studies evaluating economic value and impact on existing control systems' installations. Reviews project documentation, drawings, equipment specifications and complex loop narratives. * Participates on teams to support refinery activities such as process unit alarm management defect elimination, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Management of Change (MOC). * Works extended hours, as required, including nights and weekends in process operations environment and during periods of inclement weather. Accesses areas of refinery requiring use of stairs and/or ladders to inspect control equipment. * Responds to process unit control upsets during off hours. * Utilizes knowledge of DCS (distributed control system), PLCs (programmable logic controllers), SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition), instruments, analyzer, process networks in process control configuration and implementation. Ensures adherence to corporate standards, guidelines and performance metrics to define, implement and promote optimal utilization and benefits of process control engineering solutions. * Provides support for all process control applications, maintenance, installation, migration, control loop management as well as steady state and dynamic models. Monitors performance and recommends modifications to improve reliability of models. Supports configuration of process control technology versions and operator interfaces. Performs assessments and assists with process control best practices network. Requirements Education * Minimum undergraduate degree in chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering required, chemical preferred.
