Electrical Designer II - Electrical Utility Distribution

Introduction

Merrick & Company is looking for an Electrical Designer II for our growing San Antonio, TX office. This office specializes in Federal, State and Local Government electrical design projects including medium voltage power, gas distribution, and facility electrical systems. This is a full time position.

Job Description

Work involves a variety of activities including conceptual and detailed design / documentation of medium voltage power distribution including 15kV and 35kV of overhead and underground lines, service transformers, and electrical service to industrial, commercial and residential properties. Work requires knowledge of the NESC, CPS Energy or other utility's standards, experience with 15kV and 35kV design for overhead and or underground systems, NEC as applicable for over 1000V design, field investigations and construction support. Candidate shall be capable of performing electrical calculations, electrical system design and documentation, and be capable of self-guiding for project assignments under the supervision of PE licensed engineers. Design software experience is a requirement, with knowledge of GIS systems and BIM (preferably REVIT) highly desired. Construction administration will include As-Built drawing review, site inspection, and site investigation report production for overhead and underground systems.

Candidates with electrical design experience of 600V and lower systems are encouraged to apply. Such systems include facility power distribution, lighting, grounding and lightning protection systems, motor control systems and instrumentation, fire alarm system, data communication raceway and cabling system.

This position may require up to six months reporting to the client's office (either 1604/Green Mountain Rd or I-35/Zarzamora St) for work. The successful candidate shall have excellent communication and technical writing skills and meet expectations for attendance and punctuality.

Required Experience

  • Four years minimum of overhead, underground or combination experience is required

  • Experience with CPS Energy or other electric utility design projects is highly desired

  • Minimum 2 years of experience using AutoCAD or other design software based drawing generation, Revit experience is preferred

  • Experience using electrical calculation tools is desired, including SKM Power Tools, SKM Ground Mat, and lighting design software such as AGi32

  • Proficient using Microsoft Office Excel & Word

  • Experience using technical codes: NESC, NEC, ISA, IEEE Regulatory Codes

  • Client projects for this position require US Citizenship

  • Local candidates strongly preferred

  • Degree Requirements:
    Associates degree or technical college certification is preferred

  • Candidate must pass a background check given the criteria set by the client

Physical Requirements

  • The job requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation (approximately 75%) and field visits for projects (approximately 25%).

Essential Job Functions * Reviews electrical plans for conformance with the National Electric Code and local City codes. * Performs daily inspections of work output of Plans Examiners and clerical staff to ensure accuracy of work and efficiency in methods and procedures. * Performs preliminary plan reviews for Architects, Designers, and Engineers on major project in the design stage. * Meets with the public, architects, engineers, and developers to resolve any problems or answer any questions. * Conducts training programs for Plans Examiners and Field Inspectors. * Responds to questions by phone pertaining to building, zoning, and Unified Development Codes. * Maintains accurate records and files in order to properly control the processing of plans and applications and to determine and disseminate requested information. * Reviews updated codes for adoption, implementation, etc. * Acts as City liaison for the Board of Appeals and assists other boards for determination of code related items. * Interprets codes and analysis of all types of requests for alternate methods of materials and construction. * Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required. Job Requirements * Two (2) years of college from an accredited college or university. * Five (5) years of experience in reading and interpreting architectural and engineering plans, blueprints, and drawings. * Electrical Senior Plans Examiner requires the ability to obtain International Code Council (ICC) certification as an Electrical Plans Examiner within one (1) year of employment. * Requires the ability to obtain a second International Code Council (ICC) certification in Building Plans Examiner, Electrical Plans Examiner, Mechanical Plans Examiner or Plumbing Plans Examiner, or Fire Plans Examiner within one (1) year of employment. * Requires the ability to obtain International Code Council (ICC) certification as a commercial Energy Plans Examiner within 18 months of employment.
