Burns & McDonnell's office in Detroit, MI, is looking for a Staff Transmission Line Designer to perform transmission line design on a variety of utility projects. The Staff Transmission Line Designer will work within our Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Global Practice to perform the following duties:

  • Responsible for the design of high voltage (69-500kV) transmission lines using PLS-CADD.

  • Prepare construction documents including plan and profile drawings, structure loading trees, and foundation and assembly drawings.

  • Provide field support during construction.

  • Plans, schedules, conducts and coordinates work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.

  • Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices, but may involve a variety of complex features.

  • Requires general knowledge of precedents in specialty areas and familiarity with basic principles and practices in related specialties.

  • May coordinate departmental and divisional project studies and report preparation assignments.

  • This position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.

  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Assist project manager to develop scope of work and conceptual design for the projects.

  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager, client, and others as needed.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of one's work.

  • Other duties will be assigned as required.

  • Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or related field and eight years related experience or associate's degree and ten years related experience or eleven years progressive detailing and design experience. Field experience is desirable.

  • Expert understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables.

  • Expert knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Expert knowledge in the theory and practices of civil discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, and attention to detail.

The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting electrical plans according to budget constraints, design factors or client needs. * Lead electrical design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers. * Prepare electrical equipment: packaged equipment specifications and data sheets, Request for Qualifications (RFQ's), technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations. * Review electrical equipment vendor drawings; data interface with suppliers, clients other engineering disciplines, detailers, designers. * Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget staffing planning and construction planning. Responsible for effective management of change orders. * Applies expert knowledge of commonly used electrical concepts, practices, codes and procedures within the electrical engineering services industry. * Applies knowledge and experience to complex projects, find non-standard design solutions. * Quality review production drawings for a variety of projects and project related data as required by the project managers to verify corrections are made within multiple CAD related software. * Quality review the construction administration including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, calculations, field inspections and testing of electrical systems. * Leads field inspections, installation, measurements or calculations for public and private clients. * Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications. * Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers and contractors and develop new business opportunities. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met. * Participate sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits. * Lead the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance. * Prepare and present project budgets and cost estimates. Report project performance. * Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the electrical engineering practice. Mentor and guide less experienced engineers. * Responsible for QA/QC process adherence. * Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines. * Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies. * All other duties as assigned.
