BAE Systems, one of the world's largest defense contractors and a stable Fortune 500 Company, is hiring a highly experienced Electrical Designer at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, VA. this position will work with Project Engineers and Process Engineers along with other team members to develop project design packages including drawings, specifications, and scopes of work. The position will also support the development of proposals and estimates for projects. Later in the project lifecycle, the Electrical Designer will also support in-field construction and commissioning of the project.

  • Develop design drawings in the 3D AutoCAD system

  • Develop PLC panel designs

  • Develop designs for instrumentation and power wiring

  • Develop lighting and grounding designs

  • Develop conduit and wiring designs

  • Develop transformers, panels, and electrical room designs

  • Develop specifications for electrical and instrumentation equipment

  • Ensure designs meet NEC codes

  • Assists project team in developing bids, proposals, scopes of work, estimates, schedules, material lists, design concepts, design drawings, and other project documentation

  • Conduct equipment inspections

  • Develop designs for hazardous locations

  • Certify accuracy and completeness of all deliverable products and services in assigned areas of responsibility (to include verification of subcontractor work in accordance with Scope of Work)

  • Develop project bills of material

  • Write Work Orders and specifications for Material Purchase Requests

  • Coordinate work with suppliers, subcontractors, fabrication, maintenance and/or construction firms

  • Coordinate with Project Engineering, Process Engineering, Production, Safety and Environmental

  • Walk down systems per P&ID's and make any as-built changes to drawings

  • Participate in HAZOP and FMEA reviews

  • Support checkout, troubleshooting, and commissioning

They are responsible for driving sound technical decisions aligned with Kollmorgen (an Altra company) customer service and production goals. The responsibilities include designing to customer requirements, product quality, manufacturability and value engineering. A successful design engineer will develop the basic motor design skills necessary to drive product and cost improvements and will be integral in securing present and future business by consistently meeting customer requirements. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned. * The design engineer is responsible for the mechanical design of electric motors and/or actuators. This may include fixtures, test equipment and hardware related to production. Activities include electromagnetic modifications and application of components such as connectors, seals, gears, brakes, belts, lead screws, etc. * Develop into a Technical Leader role for one or more motor product lines * Work with sales engineers and customers to ensure designs meet customer expectations for performance and cost * Timely preparation of product cost, non-recurring engineering costs, proposals and documentation for new jobs * CAD based modeling and drafting * Translating incomplete customer requirements into useful technical specifications * Ownership of design and documentation accuracy * Manage Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes * Apply rules of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) * Engineering analysis to support product design and custom proposals * Design engineering support for manufacturing site production – local and offsite * Assist in leading Quality and Design for Manufacturability improvements * Execution and support of Value Analysis Value Engineering (VAVE) projects * Hands-on lab and prototype work * Must have strong written and oral communication skills for communication with internal and external customers. * Must have good interpersonal skills for our multi-functional design team environment Job Requirements Qualifications include: * BS in Mechanical Engineering * Work experience with electric motors and/or rotating machinery preferred * Strong mechanical and analytical skills * Knowledge of basic electrical and magnetic principles associated with electric motors * Experience with multiple engineering drafting tools preferred * 2D and 3D CAD drafting and modeling experience preferred * Self-motivated & able to work in a professional environment with limited direct supervision * Ability and willingness to work directly with customers on resolution of complex technical issues * Have an analytical mind which can apply trouble shooting skills systemically and methodically to identify root cause and resolve problems * Ability to travel nationally and/or internationally on an occasional basis * Ability and desire to perform "Hands-on" lab work * Proactive by nature with a positive attitude and ability to work well in a team setting * Ability to develop strong professional relationships both internally and externally to facilitate good communication EEO Statement: The company in which you have expressed employment interest is a subsidiary or affiliate of Altra Industrial Motion Corp.
