The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking to fill an Electrical and Electronic Systems Specialist 3 position in the Signals Shop located in Spokane, WA. This Region-wide position assists with maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing lighting, traffic signals, ramp meters, and intelligent transportation electronic systems throughout the Region. This position is critical in ensuring that our traffic signals and electrical equipment are operating at their best to keep our highways free of hazards and open to the traveling public year-round.

What to Expect

Work is performed primarily outdoors and often next to live traffic. Electrical work up to 480 VAC. May work out of bucket truck to heights up to 150 feet, lifting, pulling, and operating cranes, troubleshooting electronic/electrical equipment Negotiate rough, steep terrain; duties may be performed low to the ground or at ground level. Typical schedule is 6:00AM - 4:30PM Monday-Thursday or Tuesday

  • Friday; may be required to work nights/weekends and be available for callouts. This position covers the entire Eastern Region and will travel to work locations in the region (Spokane, Stevens, Pend Oreille, Whitman, Adams, Lincoln, and Ferry counties).

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, Electrical and Electronic Systems Specialist 3 will:

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, install, and perform preventive maintenance on highway electrical devices to include illumination systems, electrical services, traffic signals, variable message signs, traffic cameras, road & weather information systems.

  • Repair signal and pedestrian signal head outages; locate damaged junction boxes, conduits, cables and loops; make approved repairs.

  • Repair equipment in shop environments as well as in field locations.

  • Coordinate with other departments and outside agencies.

  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment and circuit problems employing various pieces of common electrical and electronic test equipment.

  • Diagnose electrical problems in control systems, ramp metering systems, weather stations, variable message signs, data stations, cameras, communication systems and traffic signal systems.

  • Schedule and perform preventative maintenance (PM) on traffic signal displays and detection systems.

  •  Install new equipment such as illumination systems, traffic signals, variable message signs, traffic cameras, road and weather information systems, highway advisory radios, flashing beacons, and school zone advisory equipment.

  • Maintain records of maintenance activities, equipment used, and inventory consumption.

  • Traverse various ground surface conditions, including kneeling, bending, pulling and reaching (i.e. slopes, ditches, gravel, guardrails, etc.).

  • Use tools and test equipment standard to the electrical/electronic industry.

  • Safely operate motor vehicles up to and including a Class B CDL truck during all hours of the day and night.

  • Perform repairs within guidelines of NEC and WSDOT codes and regulations.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, one of the following is required:

  • Five (5) years (approximately 10,000 hours) of relevant experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.

OR

  • Completion of equivalent, relevant professional format training through an electrical apprenticeship program, or accredited electrical or electronics training program, or vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronics training; agency-specific in-training plan.

OR

  • A Bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics technology and two (2) years of relevant experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.

In addition to one of the above, the following are also required:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

  • Class B CDL endorsement with air brakes or obtain within 6 months of hire.

  • Ability to work nights/weekends and be available for callouts.

  • Ability to travel to work locations within Eastern Region.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Traffic industry experience.

  • Repair technician experience.

  • Journey or Master Level Electrician (EL01, EL06, EL07, or ME01).

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
