Job Summary

This is a grant funded Special Project Worker position, grant fund may be renewed.

Assists Election Management Coordinator in overseeing election operations. Plans, supervises, schedules and monitors a section of office employees whose duties are specialized and involve varied procedures and methods. Monitors and oversees staff to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

DistinguishingCharacteristics

This is in Administrative Support series of job classifications. This classification is distinguished from the Election Workers I/II/III in that incumbents work under own initiative in performing advanced administrative/support duties and/or providing formalized work leadership. Duties are primarily supervisory in nature. This classification may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs front desk duties, answers telephone and directs calls. Takes and relays accurate messages.Provides information to telephone callers or transfers calls to appropriate personnel.Logs phone calls and visitors.

  • Courteously greets and receives the public. Answers general questions about the department, its functions and activities, and its interrelationships with County departments and outside agencies.Refers individuals to appropriate persons, departments, or agencies.

  • Performs messenger duties and picks up and delivers information to other County departments. Delivers verbal and written messages to unit members. May produce and monitor visitor identification badges.

  • May assist with poll worker early voting and election day placements.

  • Responds to requests for information from the public, County employees, political parties and elected officials.

  • Oversees workers providing help desk and troubleshooting assistance for poll workers in the field.

  • Communicateswithelectionsstaffandgeneralpublic.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Business Management, Government, Political Science, Public Administration or a directly related field AND one (1) year of increasingly responsible elections program or project management experience;

OR,

Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

Valid Texas Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Office and supervision practices and techniques.

  • Office management principles and practices.

  • Computers and computer applications.

  • Management and supervisory principles, practices and techniques.

  • Federal, State and Local applicable laws; Texas Election Code.

  • Election procedures and forms.

  • Standard practices in area of assignment.

Skill in:

  • Use of election equipment utilized in area of assignment.

  • Supervising others, including team building.

  • Problem solving and decision-making.

  • Both verbal and written communication.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively.

  • Work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.

  • Train, plan, supervise and review the work of subordinates.

  • Learn the laws and regulations of an election set forth in the Election Code.

  • Manage time well and perform multiple tasks, and organize diverse activities.

  • Perform in a stressful environment, while maintaining a professional manner.

  • Operate a variety of office equipment and a computer including word processing, spreadsheets and databases.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and officials and general public.

Work Environment & Other Information

Physical requirements include lifting/carrying minimum of 35 pounds, and may be required to lift/carry up to 100 pounds, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity, necessary to operate a computer, monitor, keyboard, printer, fax machine, copier, adding machine, typewriter and basic office equipment, vision to monitor, standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, repetitive motion, twisting, balancing, repetitive motion, client/customer contact, squatting, occasional indoor/outdoor activities to perform the essential functions. Subject to contact with communicable diseases, radiation, hazardous waste, human fecal matter and foul odors.

Travis County employees play an important role in business continuity. As such, employees can be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.
