Under direct supervision, to assist with opening and closing Vote Centers, setting up equipment and supplies, checking in and processing voters, distributing ballots, assisting voters with casting their ballots, explaining the use of voting equipment, ensuring that ballots are collected appropriately, answering voter questions, and printing, scanning, filing, batching, and boxing ballots at a Vote Center or at the Registrar of Voters Office.

This recruitment is to establish an Extra-Help eligible list for the Registrar of Voters.

Typical Tasks

When assigned to a Vote Center location:

  • Participates as a greeter, directs customers to appropriate service station, and provides customer assistance;

  • Verifies voter's name in the roster index and checks-in voter;

  • Issues ballots to voters, instructs voters how to correctly mark ballots, explains where to vote and cast ballots;

  • Assist voters using voting machines;

  • Sets-up voting machines and ballot printers daily;

  • Prepares simple records, such as logs of Vote Center activities;

  • Reconciles and secures all used and unused ballots and all election-related materials and equipment;

  • May set-up and take-down equipment, materials, and signage at voting locations;

  • May open and/or close assigned Vote Centers;

  • May transport election materials to and from Vote Centers;

When assigned to a Registrar of Voter's Office:

  • Processes voted ballots by opening and flattening, sorting, duplicating damaged ballots, and manually and electronically tallying ballots;

  • Reviews, sorts, and batches voter registration forms and other election-related documents;

  • Scans materials into tracking system; packages and prepares materials for storage and/or distribution;

  • Prepares, distributes, and picks-up supplies for polling places, outreach events, training classes, and other election events;

  • Answers inquiries and provides information to callers and visitors regarding elections, voter registration, office hours, and office/building locations;

  • Logs and obtains signatures of persons entering and leaving the building during non-office hours;

  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;

  • Performs other related duties, as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to completion of eighth (8th) grade education.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.

Knowledge of:

  • Customer services principles, including the handling of irate and distressed people;

  • Basic mathematics;

  • Basic office practices and procedures, including filing systems, reference sources, and operating standard office machines;

  • Telephone procedures and etiquette.

Ability to:

  • Learn how to facilitate voting at a voting location;

  • Communicate effectively and deal tactfully with members of the public, often under stressful conditions;

  • Follow and understand oral and written instructions;

  • Read and understand signs and labels written in English;

  • Get along well with others.
