PEOPLE FIRST - Conduct fair, accurate, secure, and transparent elections to increase public participation and confidence.

The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking seasonal Vote Center Assistant Trainersto assist in the upcoming November 2024 General Election. Vote Centers offer in-person voting, voter registration, and additional services to the public up to a month before the election.

We are currently seeking dedicated and hard-working individuals to be hired for the following duties:

  • Assist in training Vote Center Representatives, students, and volunteers on San Mateo County Elections Procedures, how to use Vote Center equipment, Vote Center set-up, and voter assistance.

  • Facilitate hands-on training scenarios for Vote Center staff.

  • Identify uniquely skilled staff for special assignments.

  • Set up, sanitize, restore, and restock the classroom between classes.

  • Communicate any notes or questions from the Vote Center Representatives regarding policy, equipment, or supplies to the Training Supervisor.

  • Serve as a Vote Center Lead at a four-day Vote Center.

This assignment will begin in mid-September. Those hired can expect to work for approximately seven weeks including on-site job training, teaching classes, and working at a 4-day Vote Center as a Vote Center Lead. The last expected day of employment will be Election Day, November 5, 2024.

The hours for this position are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with classes held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day you are scheduled for training. Training will be held on both weekdays and weekends (an exact schedule will be provided after being hired).

In addition, you will be required to serve as a Vote Center Lead at a four-day Vote Center. You MUST be available to complete the whole Vote Center assignment. Your Vote Center will have 4 hours of set-up on October 31 or November 1, full days of work (8 AM - 6PM) November 2-4, and an extended day on Election Day (6 AM - 11 PM).

This position may require working overtime, including long hours, weekends, evenings, and holidays. Any authorized time worked more than 40 hours in the workweek shall be considered overtime and shall be compensable at the rate of one and one-half (1-1/2) times the overtime worked. Generally, extra-help employees who work on a holiday shall be compensated for such time worked at the rate of one and one-half (1 1/2) times the straight-time rate as provided in the Overtime Section of this MOU for their work group.

The selected individuals must be available for the entire employment period until the completion of their assignment.

The Vote Center Assistant Trainer is classified as an Office Assistant II. The hourly wage for this position starts at $25.99.

NOTE:This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week.

Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Qualifications

Ideal Vote Center Assistant Trainer candidates will have strong public speaking abilities, teaching or training experience with adult learners, customer service, computer proficiency, and previous knowledge of Vote Center Procedures and Vote Center technology.

Critical skills for all Election Worker positions include the ability to prioritize work, learn new jobs tasks quickly, and understand and carry out oral and written directions.

The selected individuals must be available for the entire employment period until the completion of their assignment.
