Primary Role and Purpose:

Working under the direction of the Campus Administrator, the ELA/English Teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and presenting designed to help students fulfill their potential intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university is required.

  • Demonstrate competency in their core academic subject area.

Skills:

  • Ability to apply knowledge of current education and instructional theories, methodologies, techniques, and principles.

  • Knowledge of subject matter, and knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the lives and education of students.

  • Considerable judgment, tact, patience, sensitivity, and flexibility are required to deal with students from varied social economic backgrounds and learning styles.

  • Creativity and adaptive thinking required to match teaching objectives, learning strategies, and instructional plans with students' abilities.

  • Ability to effectively manage student behavior.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to set priorities and meet critical deadlines.

  • Highly proficient and skilled in multiple computer applications necessary to do the job well, including but not limited to Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds, social circumstances, and abilities.

  • Establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; strong focus on customer service and teamwork.

  • Demonstrate strong work ethic, accept responsibility, and the ability to be self-motivated.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Plan and develop lessons that fulfill the requirements of the District's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required, including activities such as preparing learning objectives and goals, studying material, setting up labs, and preparing exams. Prepare lesson plan that reflect accommodations for difference in student learning styles and instructional needs with high levels of student engagement.

  • Use the TEKS as instructional objectives to plan teaching.

  • Provide instruction to classes, individuals students, or groups of students using such methods as oral presentation, demonstration, discussion of homework assignments, answering questions, offering laboratory directions as applicable.

  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, Board policies and administrative regulations and best practices.

  • Facilitate learning in the classroom (e.g. , maintain discipline; encourage participation; consult with parents/guardians and staff to identify and address social and developmental needs.) Help students analyze and improve student methods and habits.

  • Provide formative and summative assessment of student achievement and use results to plan instructional activities. Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

  • Work cooperatively with special population teachers to modify curricula as needed.

  • Use technology to enrich and strengthen the teaching/learning process.

  • Maintain records and document student progress (e.g., record grades and absences, provide progress reports.)

  • Create a safe classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.

  • Perform all duties pertaining to area of expertise as required (e.g., Math ELA, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Career Education.)

  • Maintain contact with parents in regard to student performance, attendance, and participation through activities such as parent-teacher conferences, progress reports, letters, and special meetings.

  • Maintain professional development through such activities classes, seminars, workshops, and professional journals; provide technical guidance to less experienced teachers.

  • Perform various administrative activities (e.g., attend faculty and staff meetings, copy materials, create bulletin boards, take attendance, obtain permission slips, and coordinate activities.)

  • Prepare lesson materials, supplies, and equipment (e.g. copy materials, set up audio visual equipment, arrange lab materials.)

  • Monitor student behavior both inside and outside the classroom (e.g. during class in Hallways between classes, and during assemblies, extracurricular activity meetings or events, fire/emergency drills, or other group activities.)

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and stand, and talk or hear and sometimes walk. Some movement throughout the classroom is generally necessary to facilitate learning. Occasionally, the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally stoop, bend, push or lift items. The employee is directly responsible for safety, wellbeing, and work output. Light Lifting of materials and other objects associated with a classroom environment is required. (e.g., laptops, books. teaching aids, up to approximately 20-40 lbs.)

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material on computers, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires extensive use of computers and frequent use of hands and fingers to enter or type data. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

It is expected that on occasion, field trips may be made. Individuals should be willing to contribute directly or indirectly to the development of children both inside and outside the classroom, which may include working hours in addition to the regular school day. Regular attendance is required for this position.

Individual must maintain emotional control under stress.
