TITLE: Middle School ELA Interventionist (Grades 6-8)

SUMMARY: Reporting to the Building Principal, the ELA Interventionist is responsible for providing direct instruction to students, individually or in small groups, and supporting student achievement in the area of English Language Arts.

This position is responsible for monitoring, reporting, and communicating student progress and performance in the area of English Language Arts.

The goal of the ELA Interventionist is to assist students who have been identified as at-risk in the area of ELA and to provide a continuum of instructional support to close the gap while monitoring and improving student achievement to ensure that all students meet grade-level proficiency benchmarks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides team instruction in a co-teaching model with other ELA teachers;

Provides high-quality ELA instruction to individual students and small groups of students;

Uses data to identify instructional resources and methodology to use with students to reteach or extend student learning;

Collaborates with teachers, administration, and families to identify best practices for individual students and small groups of students;

Uses identified research-based interventions to focus on the needs of individual students;

Consults with ELA teachers and recommends appropriate intervention strategies for classroom teachers;

Maintains data-based documentation of continuous monitoring of student performance and progress;

Consults with the District's Curriculum Director to identify appropriate intervention and acceleration resources for students;

Communicates with teachers, administrators, and families regarding student progress;

Provides data to grade-level teams and participates in decisions about student progress;

Assists with identifying students for placement in intervention groups;

Provides diagnostic assessments for students as needed;

Consults with the middle school ELA department head as needed;

Assists the District's Curriculum Director in related professional development; and

Performs any other duties as may be required by the Building Principal.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university. Master's Degree preferred.

Licensed with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a Middle School ELA teacher with preference to dual certification in Reading/ELA. Current in research-based best practices. Experience working with small groups of students using intervention strategies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum; policies and effective instructional practices; needs of students requiring remedial instruction; understanding of the teaching and learning process; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.

Skill-based competencies include excellent organizational, communication, and human relations skills; applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; maintaining constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; and exhibiting tact and patience.

Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to infuse technology into the curriculum; ability to guide and train teachers in effective techniques and strategies; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents, and community; ability to use diagnostic data to tailor instruction to meet the needs of the student(s); ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods; position oneself to demonstrate technique; move up to 25 lbs. Accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work is generally performed primarily indoors and predominantly in a multi-purpose room/classroom and school environment. Exposure to weather conditions for in-district travel.
