EL Coordinator

The Coordinator of the English Learner Department shall be that employee member designated by the Superintendent of Schools to assist the Everett High School Administration in the proper administration of the English Learner Department at Everett High School. Accountable to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, as well as the school administration, the English Learner Coordinator will lead teachers in implementation of curriculum and instructional practices that result in exceptional student achievement and teaching. With the support of the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the English Learner Coordinator is responsible for targeted professional development. The English Learner coordinator assists in the research and implementation of best practices in curriculum and instruction and works collaboratively with his or her counterparts at Everett High School.

PREREQUISITE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum: A Master's degree from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum: Five years' experience in English Learner classroom or in a related leadership position.

  • Certification in High School English Learner Subject.

Salary:

Salary for this position will be a stipend. This stipend is to be added to the base salary according to the Everett Teachers Association contract.

Working Time:

The Coordinator of the English Learner Department will be required to work the contractual school year plus fifteen days, at the discretion of the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, and Principals. The length of the workday will be 7:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.

Duties:

Curriculum

  • Models and assists teams in modifying and differentiating to meet the needs of the individual learner.

  • Assists in teacher training and meets with teachers regularly.

  • Ensure staff are adhering to the Massachusetts Frameworks.

  • Supervise the use of instructional and assessment programs as selected by the Everett Public Schools.

Instructional Practice

  • Researches, recommends and assists with implementation of methodologies and practices that lead to high student engagement and achievement.

  • Orients teachers and provides ongoing professional development for assigned teachers.

  • Observes, mentors and holds accountable assigned teachers regarding best practices in instruction.

  • Promotes instructional practices that are modified and differentiated to meet the needs of the individual learner.

  • Assists in facilitating the integration and use of instructional technology, as appropriate.

  • Assists in planning the professional development program for faculty.

  • Teach courses at Everett High School as needed.

  • Participate in selection and implementation of high quality instructional materials in all science courses over the next three years.

Culture

  • Serves as a mentor and role model in the creation of a learning environment that supports college. readiness and student achievement.

  • Assists in planning and delivering orientation for new teachers.

Department Specific Leadership

  • Assist Director of Curriculum and their designees in vertical alignment of curriculum and instructional practices across the grade levels.

  • Assists course teams through collaboration and data analysis.

  • Visit classrooms to assist the Principals in the evaluation of teacher performance in Grades 9-12.

  • Ensure that plan books are up-to-date, two weeks in advance.

  • Ensure that his/her staff adhere to the rules and regulations of the district, including being on time in the morning, at the beginning of classes, while students are filing, and at dismissal.

  • Monitor staff to ensure they are meeting contractual obligations.

  • Hold Departmental Meetings to discuss any necessary information, forwarding agenda, minutes and attendance to school administration.

  • To monitor the performance of students and in order to close the achievement gap, the department chair shall review, analyze and discuss quarterly distribution of student grades/data to assess student performance and instructional delivery.

  • Analyze with department members MCAS and other data, and distribute the analysis with recommendations to teachers, principals and the Directors of Curriculum.

  • Be responsible for developing the department's budget with assistance from department members.

School-Wide Leadership

  • Supports the mission, vision and values of Everett High School.

  • Fosters an environment and culture which promotes respect, responsibility and trust.

  • Adheres to the policies and procedures of Everett High School.

  • Perform such other duties and assume all other responsibilities, which may be assigned by the Principals, Assistant Principals, Superintendent and/or Assistant Superintendents.

  • Participates in and contributes to the Leadership Team and School Improvement Committee.

  • Assists in interviewing teachers during the hiring process.

  • Assist in the identification of at-risk students.

  • Assist the administration in monitoring all areas of student progress and discipline.

  • Assist in and attend Graduation exercises and all school events requested by the High School administration.

  • Ensure proper safety procedures in all classrooms and storage areas.

General Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively to achieve assigned duties

  • Proficient in the use of technology in student instruction

  • At least 2 years teaching experience at the secondary school level

  • Proven leadership skills and experience

  • Knowledge of secondary curriculum and instruction standards and best practices

  • Passion for quality education and high expectations for all students
