Job Description:

Specialty Program Paraprofessional

South Windsor Transition Program

Description: South Windsor Public Schools is seeking a paraprofessional who will work in the South Windsor Transition Program (SWTP). It is classified as a nine and one-half (9.5) months, 31.25 hours per week.

The SWTP program is linked with South Windsor High School (SWHS) and operates in the SWHS annex building. SWTP serves a small cohort of young adult learners, aged 18-22, who require transition services in order to bridge the gap between high school and adulthood.

Weekly activities include work internships, community outings, grocery shopping, meal preparation, and weekly social outings with neighboring transition programs to foster lasting social connections. Strong communication skills are necessary in order to interact with students with unique needs in accessing their community with greater independence. Paraprofessionals within the program serve as job coaches at work sites and also are encouraged to pursue the Public Passenger V driving endorsement to assist in transporting students on district-owned vans during the program day.

South Windsor is a diverse community of approximately 27,000 citizens and more than 5,000 public school students. The district values this diversity, and has worked to create a districtwide culture of equity and social consciousness.

SWPS is comprised of four elementary schools, one middle school (6-8), and one high school (9-12), all of which cultivate and support culturally responsive classrooms and learning communities. The ongoing work of our teachers and staff includes the creation of enriching experiences that expand the depth of knowledge for students beyond today's classroom in order to produce graduates with the 21st century skills needed to make them college or career ready.

Qualifications: Previous experience working with school age children in a special education program is desired.

Assistance with toileting and lifting may be required. Applicant must possess an associate's degree, two years of college credits, or have passed the ParaPro exam.
