Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC

Support families of children with hearing loss in maximizing their child's linguistic and educational progress. This position will be primary daylight hours with flexibility for travel to community event at various times and days.


  • Assist families in developing advocacy skills and comfort in being a fully knowledgeable member of the IFSP/IEP team

  • Assist families in developing an understanding of the appropriate laws regarding EI and education, and support in creating an appropriate IFSP or IEP for their child

  • Collaborate on workshops and educational programs for families and educators

  • Conduct didactic sessions for various professional and community organizations, as requested

  • Cultivate relationships with personnel at Schools for the Deaf, Listening and Spoken Language Schools, Intermediate Units, School Districts and Early Intervention Providers

  • Develop and refine Educational Liaison procedures and protocols.

  • Maintain inventory of literature, reference material and reports

  • Meet with and counsel families of children newly diagnosed with hearing loss about educational options in their area

  • Offer training and support to EI Programs and school districts unable to provide this through their own staff, including classroom observation, as needed

  • Participate in relevant organizations related to educating children with hearing loss

  • Participate in the development of short and long-term goals of the Hearing Center, ENT, and Audiology Departments related to serving children with hearing loss and their families

  • Provide an important bridge for children with hearing loss between the clinical and service providers, and Early Intervention / school settings

  • Provide families with printed materials and direct them to websites so that they can expand their knowledge about hearing loss and raising a child with hearing loss

  • Provide information to families who are new to the area about educational options for their child with hearing loss

  • Provide teachers and administrators in Early Intervention (EI) Programs and schools serving children with hearing loss a credible, professional resource in maximizing the student's auditory skill development and educational progress

  • Serve as Educational Expert to hearing health care providers

  • Serve as a conduit of specific information between hearing health care providers and the IFSP or IEP team

  • Support families in making referrals to outside agencies, as needed

  • Support families of children with hearing loss in maximizing their child's linguistic and educational progress.

  • Update professional knowledge and skills by completing a minimum of ten hours of continuing education (contingent upon funding) during each fiscal and/or rating year


  • Bachelors Degree in Deaf Education, Masters Degree preferred

  • Three (3) years experience in Deaf Education Fluent in American Sign Language, preferred Listening and Spoken Language Certification, preferred

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills Excellent written and oral communications skills, including Power Point and public speaking Knowledge of educational landscape for children with hearing loss in Western Pennsylvania

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance

This position will work a regular Monday through Friday daylight schedule. The Nurse Liaison will obtain radiology and medication authorizations for solid tumor and hematologic patient population The position will review coding, medical, and electronic health information to obtain treatment authorizations. Also, the Nurse Liaison will review schedules for upcoming appointments and verify insurance coverage. This position will be working with high patient volumes in a busy work environment. There is minimal patient interaction over the phone and no direct face to face patient interaction. The Nurse Liaison will collaborate with other clinical team members (physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers).
