Under the direction of the teacher and supervision of the Director of Special Services, the Educational Interpreter assists teachers and other instructional staff members with the delivery of the educational program in an assigned school or schools, performs specialized sign language or oral interpreting and reverse interpreting duties in a regular hearing classroom or tutoring center working with deaf/hard of hearing students and parents, facilitates parent education and performs related work as required.

Possessing appropriate certification in American Sign Language or an equivalent language used for assisting deaf/hard of hearing persons.DEFINITIONUnder the general direction of the site administrator and supervision of the Director of Special Services, the Educational Interpreter assists teachers and other instructional staff members with the delivery of the educational program in an assigned school or schools, performs specialized sign language or oral interpreting and reverse interpreting duties in a regular hearing classroom or tutoring center working with deaf/hard of hearing students and parents, facilitates parent education and performs related work as required.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Interprets by signing, finger-spelling and silent vocalization all instructions and discussions for deaf communication, assists student(s) with understanding and responding to teacher's instructional program; tutors student(s) under direction of a teacher when needed; assists with group and individual learning activities as planned with teacher; assists in instructing and supervising student(s) to implement and follow-up to complete assignments given by teacher; works primarily with an assigned deaf/hard of hearing student(s) but may be used in related classroom activities related to paraprofessional work in the temporary absence of the assigned student; serves as a liaison with the deaf/hard of hearing community for interpreting purposes.Education: A combination of education and training equivalent to a high school diploma; Title I compliant as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and/or the Liberty Union High School District for paraprofessionals; Certification in American Sign Language or equivalent fluency as required by law.
