Job Title: ED FELLOWS - EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT

Reports To: BUILDING PRINCIPAL

General Job Description:

Bernalillo Public School District (BPSD) has received a grant award from New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) to hire Educator Fellows to work with our students. The goals of the Educator Fellows Program are to:

Create a new teacher/educator pipeline for schools in New Mexico.

Improve adult to student ratios in classrooms as the state recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Educator Fellows Program will provide critical hands-on experiences in the education field. This two-year fellowship (2022-2023 and 2023-2024) is ideal for individuals who enjoy interacting with youth from diverse populations in a school setting, have good communication skills, are flexible, want to make a positive difference in the lives of young people and have a desire to become a certified teacher in New Mexico.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Educator Fellow is considered a "teacher-in-training" and will assist a mentor teacher to:

  • Provide instructional support services under the direct supervision of a highly qualified teacher.

  • Assist a Mentor Teacher with program content and maintain open communication with both the Mentor Teacher and Program Director.

  • Consult and assist with the Mentor Teacher on a continuous basis regarding program content and progress of students.

  • Plan individualized targeted instruction to students in the areas of reading and math, either in a small group or 1 to 1 setting with the collaboration of the Mentor Teacher.

  • Provide individualized targeted instruction to students in the areas of reading and math either in a small group or 1 to 1 setting with the collaboration of Mentor Teacher

  • Consult with Mentor Teacher in tracking student progress, monitoring, and planning of interventions.

  • Maintain current and accurate records as required

  • Participate in all required/appropriate site/district professional development.

  • Complete micro courses and professional development series on various topics to include but not limited to classroom management, math intervention, reading intervention, high intensity tutoring strategies, and cultural and linguistically responsive teaching and learning.

  • Develop strong relationships with students and colleagues.

  • Participate in regular coaching and feedback sessions. Consult and assist with the Mentor Teacher on a continuous basis regarding program content and progress of students.

  • Adhere to educational guidelines as defined by the New Mexico Public Education Department. Comply with local, state, and federal rules and regulations. All current New Mexico Covid-19 guidelines set forth by the NM Department of Health will be followed at all times.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Communicate accurate and up to date information to students in a way that enhances student learning.

  • Manage time appropriately.

  • Cooperate with administration, parents, and co-workers.

  • Take precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.

  • Complete duties (hall, bus, etc.) as assigned.

  • Maintain student involvement in appropriate tasks.

  • Use and apply appropriate conflict resolution skills.

  • Demonstrate public relations skills.

  • Use appropriate techniques, strategies, and materials to achieve the desired instructional goal.

  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect.

  • Be responsible for students on field trips.

  • Act as a good role model within the context of the school.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma (required).

  • NMPED Educational Assistant License or be eligible to receive one of these licenses.

  • College coursework, preferably in education.

  • Willingness to experience and gain knowledge of Pueblo and Hispanic culture

  • Native speakers preferred.

  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Internet).

  • Reading and writing skills.

  • Interpersonal communication skills, including teamwork.

  • Ability to be self-directed and self-motivated.

  • Ability to follow directions.

  • Task-oriented, ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to practice empathy and treat people with respect and professionalism at all times.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing, lifting, and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, climbing, squatting, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required.

Safety and Health:

  • Child Abuse/Substance Abuse Workshop

  • Bloodborne Pathogens Standard Training

Equipment/Material Handled:

Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, multi-media equipment including current technology as needed.

Work Environment:

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature and air quality. Job responsibilities require both inside and outside assignments. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. Occasional after hour work may be required. Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required.

Terms of Employment:

182 Days.
