WINDSOR UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: Special Education Teacher Pre-K - 13 DEFINITION:

Under the general supervision of site and program administrator (Special Education Director), provides a program of education for students who are mild to severely handicapped. Employee implements an instructional program which allows each student to achieve his/her individual education program objectives. Employee demonstrates extensive knowledge and practical application of behavioral principles, practices, methods and strategies applicable to students with severe handicaps, including behavior analysis and classroom management based on positive reinforcement.

Employee demonstrates extensive knowledge in the area of standards-based instruction and utilizes a wide variety of instructional strategies. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following are typical duties and examples of responsibilities for positions in this classification.

Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed below. • Provide assessment and diagnostic procedures for the student • Develop Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each student in consultation with the IEP team • Provide a wide variety of instructional strategies to meet student needs • Work as a member of a trans-disciplinary team for planning and implementing data based instructional programs • Implement, develop or revise instructional materials which correspond with each student's IEP • Provide direct instruction and service to students • Develop clear lesson plans, utilize instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil's IEP • Monitor student progress as it relates to established IEPs • Utilize computers and software programs to communicate with stakeholders and to enhance the learning environment • Monitor student progress utilizing electronic media and software • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior and safety needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom • Maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with students, teachers, staff, parents and other agencies • Provide information and support to parents and families when appropriate • Maintain accurate reports, records and files on individual students • Assist in identifying, developing and implementing appropriate use of resources for instructional applications • Ensure a safe and healthy environment for all students, adhering to all applicable laws, codes and policies • Create a functional and attractive environment for learning through the displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers • Maintain professional competence through inservice in education activities provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth activities • Perform basic attendance accounting, record keeping, special education paperwork and other necessary paperwork • Participate cooperatively with the site administrator to mutually develop the system by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with the District's uniform guidelines for evaluations and assessment • Plan and coordinate the work of paraprofessionals as needed • Perform duties as assigned within the grade-level or site • Maintain student confidentiality REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. KNOWLEDGE OF AND ABILITY TO: • Collaborate and help implement a behavior plan with modification and emphasis on positive reinforcement • Comply with laws, codes and regulations as they relate to special education • Maintain interagency relationships and effective methods of program coordination • Apply the principles of behavior analysis and behavior modification with an emphasis on positive reinforcement to the delivery of instruction • Provide instructional methodology which results in student success and the achievement of IEP goals and objectives • Develop task and activity analyses which correspond with each student's IEP • Write performance objectives which are measurable, observable and verifiable • Communicate ideas and concepts clearly and concisely in both oral and written form • Maintain and improve professional skills and knowledge • Be flexible and receptive to change EDUCATION: REQUIRED EDUCATION: • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university • Valid California Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in special education • Masters degree with an emphasis in special education preferred • ELL certification (ie:

CLAD or BCLAD) • Meet the federal standards for a Highly Qualified Teacher DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: • Bilingual/Biliterate in English and Spanish PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
