Position Title:

Education Specialist

Positions Characteristics:

The Education Specialist implements plans of work, assuring that all tasks are accomplished within time frames outlined in grants and contracts. Working directly with students, the Education Specialist promotes, implements, monitors and reports all activities related to assigned projects. The position is full time.

Job Qualifications:

  • Degree in education, Master's preferred

  • Alaska Teaching Certificate

  • Experience planning, implementing, monitoring, and reporting project grants and contracts

  • Experience as a teacher

  • Experience developing and implementing curriculum

  • Experience conducting training and workshops

  • Demonstrated ability to work with culturally diverse groups

  • Familiarity with Federal and State laws, regulations, and policies related to education programs and grant administration

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate the activities of several employees

  • Grant writing experience preferred

Position Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with other SERRC staff to operationalize programs

  • Participate in the development and distribution of promotional materials

  • Develop and conduct presentations and workshops to promote programs

  • Participate in the development and implementation of program policies and procedures

  • Support and supervise on-site professional and paraprofessional staff

  • Participate in the development and delivery of curriculum

  • Organize, collect, prepare, and analyze data and submit reports as required

  • Develop and maintain a network of communication resulting in effective program delivery and future funding for programs

  • Participate in the organization and coordination of staff development opportunities

  • Provide project liaison with associations, Department of Education and Early Development, and other professional associations and / or agencies as directed

  • Maintain identifiable student information in a safe, confidential, and secure manner

VIEW JOBS 8/17/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-11-15T00:00 The Department of Education and Early Development, Division of Innovation and Education Excellence is recruiting for an Education Specialist II to join our Special Education team. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with the special education programs and services for all eligible students with disabilities in Alaska, interpreting state and federal special education laws and regulations, and recommending appropriate policies and procedures. As a team member, the selected candidate will monitor school districts during verification visits to determine if the district is in compliance with state and federal regulations, evaluate program and student eligibility, determine if corrective actions are required, and monitor the completion of any required corrective actions. This position serves as the program manager for approximately 18 school district special education programs, which includes approving grant applications; providing technical assistance on a daily basis to district staff and parents; and providing department assistance in assigned specialty areas. The incumbent also serves as a department representative on teams and leads meetings related to special education projects. The selected candidate will serve on committees in such areas as complaint investigations, due process hearing requests, mediations, IEP facilitation, Alaska State Special Education Conference (ASSEC) Board, Stone Soup Group - PTI (Parent Training Initiative), Alaska Parents' Guide, Department of Labor - Division of Vocational Rehab (DVR), Procedural Safeguards, Special Olympics, eLearning and online education modules, and the Governor's Council on Disabilities and Special Education sub-committees. Travel in small planes in Alaskan weather may be required for this position. Candidates for this position may be required to drive during monitoring trips, also in Alaskan weather conditions. Occasional travel to districts in rural areas where no hotel accommodations are available may be necessary, requiring the candidate to sleep in the school facility. Special Notice: Applicants are required to possess (or be eligible for) a Initial, Professional or Master Alaska Teacher Certificate or Administrator Certificate with an endorsement in special education OR a Professional Type C Alaska Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in a Related Service. Applicants will be required to possess an Alaska Teacher Certificate at the time of employment and be required to maintain certification as a condition of employment. Specific endorsements in special education or related service are required. WRITING SAMPLE A business writing sample is required as part of the application package. Please see the "Additional Application Instructions" section below for more information.Bachelor's degree from an accredited college and four years of professional experience in education, one year of which was as a staff advisor/specialist, administrator, supervisor or consultant in planning, developing and maintaining standards and evaluating educational and vocational curricula or educational programs in a specialized field. Substitution: Appropriate graduate study may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the non-specialized experience to a maximum of two years.
