The Quality Education Specialist within Center of Excellence Learning and Performance Department is a bachelors or masters prepared clinician who combines the attributes of being quality and metrics focused, experienced in guiding teams of people, and able to support education specialists to quantify their achievement of outcomes and results reflecting adherence to Magnet Framework.

Under general supervision of the Manager, the educator with a quality focus monitors adherence to organizational and unit policies and procedures, supports curriculum development and accepted nursing protocols and procedures.

The Education Quality Specialist is a member of the Center of Excellence's Learning and Performance (L&Ps) Team where a culture of learning and evidence based practice drive our performance in impacting outcomes of care and the family experience.

Under general supervision of the Manager, the Quality Specialist provides data collection and analysis to show the impact of education in promoting positive patient outcomes; works closely with unit based educators and nursing leaders to ensure adherence to organizational and unit policies and procedures, and accepted nursing protocols and procedures. Collaborates with Risk Management, Quality and Regulatory to ensure complete education and documentation of education for nursing. Oversees the development and integration of quality metrics into L&Ps educational offerings.

As the Quality Specialist learns and supports migration from Cornerstone LMS to Oracle, the individual will learn about how LMS supports achievement of quality monitoring. Education and training with Cornerstone as we migrate over to Oracle will be offered to assure the Quality Specialist's success.

DEPARTMENT LEADERSHIP:

Coordinates the day-to-day quality operations and long term monitoring initiatives and deliverables for the department:

  • Along with manager, Involved in shaping departmental quality strategy.

  • Supports department and/or organizational level needs for aggregates data with regards to competency; supports learner needs assessments and identification of themes to Inform L&Ps staff development, strategic planning, and support growth in competency success.

  • With direction from Manager, oversees development of quality improvement plans in collaboration with the Quality department based on leadership recommendations. Provides oversight for L&P's contributions to regulatory and Connecticut Children's audits. Enhances and implements Quality Assurance (Utilization Review, Incident Review) and Quality Improvement initiatives with an emphasis on tying problems to educational solutions to impact outcomes.

  • Establishes procedures to ensure quality care, patient safety and the most efficient use of resources as educational curriculum is designed and delivered

  • Chart documentation and program audits

  • Compliance with infection control P&P

  • Outreach to various departments for their quality metrics that tie to educational offerings;

  • Ties educational programing to compliance with regulations of the Joint Commission, Department of Public Health, OSHA and other regulatory bodies.

  • Liaison and support leader of organizational skin program overseeing the Skin, Wound and Ostomy RN

  • PTAP: participating with educators to track data in anticipation for reporting

  • Certifications: review of cornerstone for CPI, MCPP, CPR, Pals, Pals instructor certification

  • Facilitates teamwork and cooperation among staff in determination of quality metrics and analysis of data that influence education and its outcomes; seeks support from the Manager as needed.

  • Leads a variety of quality duties; maintains appropriate department files.

  • Responsible for development and sustainment of a training program and report structure for L&P team members for quality and outcome reporting. Facilitates quality discussions during staff meetings.

CLINICAL EDUCATION and PRACTICE:

  • Designs quality monitoring tools, coordinates, implements and evaluates orientation, training and on-going education for nursing staff.

  • Work with L&P team to monitor data collection oversight of CPR, PALS, Mental Health and policy education for interdisciplinary team members

  • Effectively and efficiently collaborates with department managers to ensure that annual clinical validations are appropriate and staff competencies are maintained. Serves as resource to staff and managers for patient care standards.

  • Oversees data collection for annual meeting and assists Nurse Residency Director with quality metrics monitoring for the ANCC PTAP reaccreditation of the Nurse Residency Program.

  • Educates nursing staff on optimal patient and family education, including identifying resources, documenting learning needs and competencies.

  • Seeks opportunities for improvement and innovation

  • Actively engaged in the autonomy of nursing

  • Integrates evidence-based findings into practice

  • Considers educational programming from a population, community and public health perspective.

  • Become certified as an MCPP trainer

  • Facilitate PALs Ed under lead PALS facilitator

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT:

Demonstrates commitment to continuous quality improvement; works with Risk, Quality, Nursing and Compliance to identify educational needs of nursing;

  • Collaborates with Quality as appropriate for the roll out of hospital-wide initiatives.

  • Identifies clinical issues and leads quality improvement and/or research activities directed toward improving patient care.

  • Assists in providing written and oral data reporting and analysis; prepares presentations as needed.

Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with Connecticut Children's standards.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • RN: BSN minimum requirement; Master's Degree of Science in Nursing preferred or Masters in Public Health

  • Experience with quality and data analytics

LICENSE and/or CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

  • Current State of Connecticut Registered Nurse licensure required.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR in adult, child & infant is required.

  • PALS certification preferred

  • ANPD certification preferred and required within 2 years of hire
