Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. Reporting to the Director of Education, the Education Manager, Generalist will provide educational leadership in managing, developing, and growing BAM's new and ongoing contemporary and African dance education programs and internships and continuing education programs along with contributing to BAM Education's overall department initiatives and goals. Effectively manage the outreach, administration, and implementation, and evaluation of the DanceAfrica in the Classroom residency program (both general and special needs classrooms), the Spring Dance Insider after-school program, Brooklyn Interns for Arts and Culture high school internship program, and Creative Career Collective pre-professional program for BAM Education alumni.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Co-facilitate and manage curriculum development for all dance education-related programming at BAM.

  • Manage all education resource development for BAM Education.

  • Manage the curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation of all dance-related virtual programs.

  • Develop and implement peer-to-peer events and projects between other programs and participants in collaboration with other Education staff.

  • Manage culminating events and field trips for program participants.

  • Facilitate dance education professional development for BAM teaching artists.

  • Co-facilitate pre-show preparatory workshop curriculum development, evaluate in-school implementation, and performance introductions and post-show Q&As in conjunction with BAM's school-based educational film and live performance programming and public events, along with other education staff.

  • Support the hiring, coaching, and evaluating of teaching artists to guide them in fulfilling programmatic goals and terms of employment.

  • Co-facilitate pre-show preparatory workshop curriculum development, evaluate in-school implementation, and performance introductions and post-show Q&As in conjunction with BAM's school-based educational film and live performance programming and public events, along with other education staff.

  • Support the hiring, coaching, and evaluating of teaching artists to guide them in fulfilling programmatic goals and terms of employment.

  • Facilitate curriculum development that aligns with the educational imperatives of BAM's Education Department and the standards of the NYC Department of Education.

  • Facilitate dance education trainings and professional development for staff, teaching artists, interns, and educators.

  • Observe, assess, and coach teaching artists.

  • Build and maintain a network of dance education and post-secondary (college and professional) stakeholders.

  • Attend education-related local and national conferences, network gatherings, and professional development to stay on top of dance education trends and best practices.

  • Develop and maintain program application materials while providing support to schools and participants through the application process.

  • Develop and implement participant evaluations for each program to measure outcomes.

  • Manage the development and dissemination of program-related resource materials for educators and teaching artists.

  • Supervise interns and program assistants.

  • Schedule and attend planning meetings with teaching artists and program partners.

  • Develop and maintain programmatic schedules and timelines of deliverables.

  • Support existing community-based relationships and build new partnerships with schools, parents, and community organizations.

  • Participate in development meetings with potential funders, coordinate observational site visits for current funders to observe, and provide program reports.

  • Contribute to marketing and press initiatives in collaboration with BAM's marketing, design and communications departments.

  • Oversee production requirements for program-related culminating events.

  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of distance learning program components and other digital initiatives.

  • Develop and manage program budgets with Director of Education.

  • Uphold departmental guidelines and follow operational protocols

  • Assist in supporting programs managed by other BAM Education and Community staff as well as department-wide programs.

  • Attend performances, seminars, and conferences related to programming in the department.

  • Must be able to work hybrid schedule

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or commensurate work experience.

  • Three or more years of experience in dance education with a focus on contemporary dance and African dance styles, youth development, and program administration.

  • Experience with pre-professional and post-secondary training.

  • Background in one or more contemporary dance and African dance disciplines.

  • Knowledge of the choreographic process, developing dance literacy skills, culturally responsive pedagogy, and elements of dance education.

  • Experience teaching in and with New York City schools, particularly in Brooklyn.

  • Experience administering in-school and out-of-school time programs.

  • Experience working with a diverse range of student populations, particularly students of color.

  • Experience working with and teaching educators.

  • Experience with special needs students and audiences.

  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office and Google Suite; Tessitura a plus; Distance Learning: Google Hangouts, Teams, and Zoom.

  • Experience assessing and evaluating teaching artists and programs.

  • Willingness to work some nights and weekends.

  • Ability to work well with diverse communities and individuals.

  • Strong facilitation and teaching skills

  • Culturally responsive and able to collaborate effectively with diverse communities.

  • Able to engage a range of learners in a variety of learning contexts.

  • Strong communication and outreach skills.

  • Ability to be a team player, open to giving and receiving encouragement and constructive feedback.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time. Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.

  • Community-liaison (off-site work in schools and with community partners)

Compensation: This position is full-time and exempt. The salary for this role is $73,000/yr and will be paid in accordance with the 2110 Collective Bargaining Agreement. In addition, this role is eligible for a comprehensive benefit package options including medical, dental and vision insurance, retirement plan opportunities including 401(k) and pension options, as well as BAM related perks including access to BAM's amazing programming.
