NASHVILLE ZOO PAID INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

EDUCATION INTERNSHIP | SPRING 2023

Do you want to inspire a passion to conserve the natural world? As an Education Intern at Nashville Zoo you will have the opportunity to gain experience in presenting thematic interpretive programs, leading education programs and developing your knowledge on a variety of topics including conservation, wildlife biology, botany, history and park management.

Applicants must be college aged or a recent college graduate with interest in the natural, physical or cultural sciences, communication, education, natural science interpretation or recreation and resources management. As part of your internship, you will receive training in methods that were developed as part of Denver Zoos ROADMAP program as well as techniques taught as part of the National Association for Interpretations (NAI) Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) Course. Education Internships will be on a full-time basis with intern working 30 to 40 hours per week.

JOB TITLE: Education Intern

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES -- This supervised education position interacts with animals, guests, volunteers, and other Zoo staff. Upon completion of training, the placement consists of:

  • Assisting in development, facilitation and evaluation of education programs and interpretive experiences for a wide range of audiences on grounds, off grounds and virtually

  • Working to create programs aligned with Nashville Zoos Program Content Standards, Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core Standards in Science, Math, Reading and Language Arts

  • Developing program evaluations that assesses participant learning as well as informs program development

  • Learning to make positive contributions to enhance the guest experience at Nashville Zoo

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES -- Applicants will be assessed according to their knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:

  • Passion and interest in exploring a zoo or conservation related field

  • Knowledge of biology, zoology and conservation issues

  • Strong public speaking skills

  • Ability to work with all age groups

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to follow written and oral directions

  • Guest-service oriented and enthusiastic about providing guests an enriching experience

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS

  • College aged or recent college graduate

  • Willingness to study and learn curriculum provided by Zoo

  • Submit to a criminal background check and drug screening

  • Submit proof of a negative TB Test

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

  • Requires frequent moving about for long distances and over uneven terrain

  • Will be expected to wear the approved uniform and observe the same personal appearance standards required of all Zoo staff

  • Must be able to work a set schedule which will include flexible hours, evenings, holidays, and/or weekends

  • Frequent exposure to the outside elements and summer heat can be expected.

INTERN REQUIREMENTS

  • Present and on time for all assigned shifts

  • Active engagement in all aspects of assigned duties

  • Attendance at all required training sessions and lectures

  • Attendance at all meetings with assigned Intern Coordinator, Volunteer Manager and other mentors

  • Completion of all assignments including two projects for each 12-week term

  • Maintain a written journal throughout internship term

Youth Villages' commitment to helping youth &amp; families find success spans more than 35 years and includes a comprehensive array of programs and services.</p><p>Responsibilities</p><p>Youth Villages places interns each summer throughout our Tennessee residential treatment programs and group homes in Memphis &amp; Nashville. Interns serve as assistants to the treatment team for a specific group of youth referred for a variety of behavioral and mental health needs. Initial training will be provided on child development, trauma-informed care, crisis de-escalation, and more before beginning work with our youth.</p><p>The internship is a 10-week, full-time, paid position running from May 30 - August 4, 2023. Interns must be able to commit to work for the duration of the summer.</p><p>Opportunities are available for both bachelor's and master's level interns.</p><p>The internship is a 40 hour/week position. Schedules will vary depending on residential treatment program assignment, training, and/or other events.</p><ul><li>Bachelor's level interns in Memphis will work alongside our residential direct care and leadership staff on Monday</li></ul><ul><li><p>Friday from approximately 1pm</p></li><li><p>9:30pm. Bachelor's level interns in Nashville may have a more varied schedule, but will work no more than 40 hrs/week.</p></li></ul><ul><li>Master's level interns will work alongside our residential clinical staff on Monday</li></ul><ul><li><p>Friday from approximately 8:30am</p></li><li><p>5pm.</p></li></ul><p>Responsibilities include but are not limited to:</p><ul><li><p>Providing a positive role model to residents by participating in all activities, demonstrating a healthy and wholesome approach to life, &amp; developing a sense of community</p></li><li><p>Assisting youth with the positive development and implementation of individual goals and objectives</p></li><li><p>Attending cottage/courtyard planning meetings and treatment team meetings</p></li><li><p>Assisting in resolving conflicts with residents using problem solving techniques and role playing</p></li><li><p>Giving residents immediate feedback on appropriate and inappropriate behavior</p></li><li><p>Planning and leading recreational activities and participating or instructing youth in games</p></li><li><p>Facilitating ongoing group evaluations throughout the day for planned groups, activities and responsibilities.</p></li><li><p>Working with other staff and residents to develop and implement life skills groups</p></li><li><p>Responsible for maintaining a safe program environment through appropriate responses and attendance</p></li><li><p>Adhering to treatment model and Re-Ed philosophy</p></li><li><p>Participating in weekly consultations with other interns and campus leadership</p></li><li><p>Master's level interns also assist with treatment planning and facilitating individual, group, and family therapy with supervision from licensed clinical staff.</p></li></ul><p>Offers for our paid summer internship program are made on a rolling basis until all slots have been filled.
