JOB PURPOSE

The Education Coordinator works with the Program Director to coordinate training activities for the Phlebotomy Training Program. Works with Support Services Supervisors and Managers to schedule continuing education activities, training, and competency assessments for all nonlicensed personnel (CPTs and Processors). Provides orientation and inservice education for all nonlicensed laboratory personnel.

Participates with Preceptor training and assessment. Assures the quality improvement of all training activities, including complete documentation. Provides training on new systems applications. Provides input on staff performance.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES / SPECIFIC JOB COMPETENCIES

1.Completes required continuing education for CPT certification. Maintains own technical checklist.

Takes initiative for planning and completing professional development as it applies to laboratory goals, system goals, and personal/professional goals. Facilitates meeting laboratory goals and system goals by sharing information obtained through professional development activities. Percentage of time: 10 %

2.Coordinates all activities under the Phlebotomy Training Program. Schedules phlebotomy rotations and assigns Preceptors.

Participates with phlebotomy lectures. Assures that all documentation required for accreditation of the phlebotomy program is complete and accurate. Facilitates students in the program with completing required applications for exams and CPT certification.

Participates with any onsite inspections of the program. Percentage of time: 20 %

3.Effectively communicates with team members in order to complete assigned tasks. Organizes and prioritizes duties as needed.

Able to work as a team player in regard to workstation, shift, and schedule needs to best serve laboratory and health system goals. Organizes time to prioritize, perform, and complete assigned tasks in order to meet labwide needs and deadlines. Demonstrates initiative by taking a lead role when appropriate. Percentage of time: 15 %

4.Coordinates orientation and new employee training for all nonlicensed personnel. Assures that all training activities are thoroughly documented.

Provides competency assessment activities for the department, all nonlicensed personnel, and Preceptors. Identifies when inservice or remedial training is indicated and plans and coordinates those activities. Percentage of time: 20 %

5.Participates in Shared Governance and/or Performance Improvement activities for the Laboratory and the Phlebotomy Training Program. Seeks ways to improving and streamlining department operations.

Participates with updating procedures and department processes. Percentage of time: 15 %

6.Provides or coordinates training (based on employee work location and job description) related to the registration of patients into various systems, order entry of requisitions into the LIS, collection of billing information, time of service payments, kit draws, ABNs, and specimen processing, transport, storage, and documentation requirements. Percentage of time: 20 %

QUALIFICATIONS

All job qualifications listed indicate the minimum level necessary to perform this job proficiently:

LEVEL OF EDUCATION

Minimum: High school grad or GED

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Minimum: California certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT). Certification and experience has been validated and has been deemed qualified under the guidelines of the State of California to perform venipuncture and skin puncture.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Minimum: Knowledge of healthcare delivery systems including physician's office, reference lab and hospital lab settings. Functional ability to use computer based systems for data management and training.

YEARS OF RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE

Minimum: 2 years working experience in a clinical laboratory with experience in phlebotomy education.

Preferred: Work experience in program development and evaluation.
