Job Description:

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is looking to fill an Education Assistant Internship (Administrative Intern) to assist the state.

Internship Purpose and Goals

To assist the State Historical Museum of Iowa education team with spring programming, including but not limited to assisting with family and break programming and supporting Goldie's Kids Club program.

The intern will also develop in-exhibit programming, specifically for Pre-K 2nd grade visitors.

Time Commitment Duration: Spring Semester - Frequency: Minimum of 8 hours per week, unpaid. Hours must be completed Monday-Friday, 9:00 am 4:30 pm. Must be preferably available Wednesdays.

Duties and Essential Activities

  • Interact with general museum visitors of all ages and provide great customer service.

  • Assist and help lead general educational programming and events such as Goldie's Kids Club and spring break.

  • Develop programming and in-exhibit materials specifically for visitors in Pre-K 2nd grade by researching other museums and cultural institutions.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Preference to applicants

  • Currently pursuing undergraduate or graduate degree in history, education, or other program applicable to museum education.

  • Have an interest in museums and museum work.

  • Must conduct oneself in mature/professional manner and be able to work accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to verbally interact with visitors of all ages, donors, and other museum stakeholders.


The intern will be invited to attend staff/department meetings as necessary/applicable. Intern will receive hands-on experience managing museum visitors and develop customer service skills. The internship will be supervised by the Museum Education Coordinator and Museum Education & Outreach Manager. Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services Human Resources Enterprise.
