The Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) is hiring an Education Administrator 1 to serve as the administrator for the Teaching and Learning team.

What You Will Be Doing

You will lead a team of professional educators focusing on improving student outcomes through the virtual education consortium as well as grant implementation around education supports. The administrator will lead, orchestrate and collaborate efforts with the following teams: Assessment, Data, Early Learning, Special Education, and School Recognition and Support, as well as supporting districts in improving their reading programs by providing professional development, technical assistance in evaluating programs, reviewing data, and identifying best practices in reading instruction and strategies. This position assists in developing and collaborating on the revision of Alaska's Literacy Blueprint and supervises the Education Specialists and support staff of the Teaching and Learning team.

PLEASE NOTE: As a condition of employment, this position requires the successful applicant to obtain and maintain a current Alaska Teacher or Administrator Certification with endorsement in Reading, Reading Specialist, or Remedial Reading OR transcripts that support completion of a State-Approved Program in reading instruction or 18 semester hours in reading instruction.

The Working Environment You Can Expect

This position may be based in Anchorage or Juneau. The position is suitable for telework if candidates meet telework qualifications; however, occasional attendance in person may be required. This position requires occasional in-state travel to attend meetings.

Our Juneau office is conveniently located in the State Office Building downtown. Our Anchorage office is located in the Atwood building. Both offices offer covered parking, easy access to restaurants, coffee shops, and other amenities. Who We Are Looking For

Our ideal candidate will have some or all of the following knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Experience using the Science of Reading to teach reading at the elementary level.

  • Experience providing professional development to adult learners.

  • Experience with using literacy screeners, reading diagnostic assessments, and implementing student plans for improvement.

  • Experience in planning and conducting meetings with stakeholders.

  • Ability to supervise and lead a team of education professionals in a diverse body of work.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelors degree, preferably in administration and/or education;

AND either

1.One year experience as an Education Specialist 1 with the State of Alaska or as a staff advisor and subject matter specialist in planning, developing and maintaining standards and evaluating educational and vocational curricula or educational programs in a specialized field of education.

OR

2.Four years experience in education including one year in an administrative or supervisory capacity at least at the level of, or equivalent to, a department head responsible for several other professionals may be substituted for the one year of specific experience.

Appropriate graduate work may be substituted for a maximum of two years of non-specialized experience as required in No. 2 of the minimum qualifications.

A masters degree in Administration and/or Education is preferred.

Special Note:

Due to the duties assigned to a majority of these positions, applicants may be required to possess an Alaska Teacher Certificate at the time of employment and be required to maintain certification as a condition of employment. Specific endorsements may also be required. Documentation is included in the file of affected positions.
