Department Description

Penn State Global is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Education Abroad Adviser to join the Education Abroad Advising and Engagement team at Penn State's University Park campus. The Education Abroad Adviser will be instrumental in promoting and supporting global learning opportunities to students at all Penn State campuses. This position involves managing a high-volume student advising caseload, helping students choose an appropriate education abroad program, assisting students with the education abroad application process and requirements, coordinating pre-departure preparation activities, and maintaining education abroad program information web pages. The ideal candidate will have a passion for global learning, a commitment to student success, and a dedication to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Manage a high-volume advising caseload, meeting and communicating regularly with students to advise on education abroad program options, costs, scholarships, academics, health and wellness, safety, and life abroad

  • Support students through the application process, including Penn State and partner institution application requirements, and manage application review and selection

  • Coordinate and help facilitate pre-departure preparation activities, including workshops, information sessions, events, and online resources

  • Maintain and update program information pages and student application materials in assigned portfolio and liaise with host institutions abroad on application processes and program updates

  • Assist with outreach and recruiting initiatives to help promote education abroad opportunities to students at all Penn State campuses

  • Provide support for students while abroad and upon return, addressing academic, health, and safety concerns, and promoting returned student programming

  • Additional administrative tasks or projects as assigned

This position is based at the University Park campus, with a hybrid work schedule possible. Due to the nature of the role, candidates should expect to work in person a minimum of three (3) days per week with a remote option available on the other days.

Education and experience

This position minimally requires a bachelor's degree or higher plus three years of work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will have excellent communication, organizational, and team-working/collaboration skills in addition to proficiency in Microsoft 365.

The Education Abroad Adviser is responsible for maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the fields of education abroad and international education. Engaging in continuing education and professional development opportunities will empower the adviser to implement best practices and new processes, ensuring quality service to students and stakeholders.

Preferred Education, Experience, or Certifications

  • Collaborative working style and demonstrates a drive for teamwork

  • Experience living or studying abroad or working in a multicultural environment is highly valued

  • Experience in using TerraDotta or a similar tool

  • Experience with maintaining and updating web page content to ensure accurate information

  • Experience advising undergraduate students

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging practices and demonstrated commitment to successfully supporting diverse student and/or faculty/staff populations

  • Commitment to learning about The Forum on Education Abroad's Guidelines for Advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals; willingness to learn more and develop and/or implement strategies to advance sustainable practices and educational opportunities into office procedures and study abroad programs

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$46,400.00 - $67,300.00
