Serves as an Editor/Writer within the Behavioral Programs Branch, Marine and Family Programs Division (MF), Headquarters Marine Corps. Provides executive level editorial support for all Behavioral Programs correspondence and tasks. The target audience for material consists of Members of Congress, Department of Defense (DOD), Commandant of the Marine Corps, and MF Leadership.

Regularly reviews executive level documents for editorial quality, consistency and compliance with established writing style, format, and content guidance. Also reviews for accuracy, readability, and appropriateness.

Provides detailed feedback to the document author to highlight strengths and areas for editorial improvement. Provides authoritative guidance on editorial matters to personnel. Reviews policy and procedural documents and suggest additions, deletions, or revisions. Maintains awareness of current government writing and reporting style and format requirements, and works directly with appropriate staff to resolve questions about its content.

Assists staff and action officers in preparing clear, accurate, and concisely written documents representing major management issues addressed to senior civilian and military executives within the DOD and Marine Corps. Examines the content of documents for clarity and length, and advises on how to organize the material structurally in terms of the order of sentences, paragraphs, sections, and findings to improve the presentation.

Assesses whether technical matters can be clearly understood and determines whether findings support the recommendations and the overall conclusions of the document. Ensures information presented is complete, accurate, and up-to-date.

Assist the author of the document with suggestions on how to restructure the material so that it is clear and convincing. Ensures that all comments on documents are addressed and portrayed according to policy.

Ensures consistency of writing mechanics and expression, logical organization and development, and general readability. Ensures clarity and correctness of spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Ensures that statements are complete, clear, and logical; that technical terminology is uniform; that syntax and expression are consistent; and that paragraph organization is logical and conveys the desired emphasis. Ensures that documents conform to government writing style, printing and publishing standards.

Determines whether tabular or graphic material is needed and suggests how the material can be clearly presented. Ensures that the narrative, any tabular material, and appendices are mutually supporting.

Suggests designs, tables, figures, or charts to depict material data when judged necessary to support the conclusion. Maintains broad knowledge of graphics and ensures proper presentation of graphics in reports based on the psychology of effective visual communication. Makes sure documents are suitable in terms of coverage, balance, method of expression, and presentation, and adheres to document objectives.

This requires a methodical analysis of content, organization, and the presentation of draft and final documents. These functions are crucial to assisting staff and action officers in obtaining command agreement with recommendations that frequently have an impact on Marine Corps-wide policies and programs.

When working on a series of interrelated documents, uses knowledge of programs to ensure consistent treatment of issues. Coordinates proposed changes in approach, emphasis, or presentation directly with the writer to produce the necessary revisions, analyses, and recommendations when documents are unclear or extensive rewriting is required to achieve a more organized presentation.

Works closely with authors during the revision process to achieve a substantial degree of balance between the often differing opinions of staff so that each viewpoint is presented fairly. Discusses changes to substance or manner of presentation of reports to resolve all disputed areas.

Provides world class customer service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner.

Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards.

Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

Bachelor's degree in Communication or a related field appropriate to the work of position AND three years of experience writing and editing technical documents, processes, and procedures; OR an appropriate combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of knowledge and skill equivalent to that gained in the above; OR appropriate experience that demonstrates that the applicant has acquired the knowledge, skills, and abilities equivalent to that gained in the above. A background in behavioral health or a related field is preferred.

  • Must have expert knowledge to write and edit documents tailored to specified media and audiences, often to include substantial rewriting.

  • Broad knowledge of publishing concepts, practices, standards, and technologies for the media used.

  • Knowledge of design, graphics, colors, layout and illustration techniques to showcase the material in an integrated, readable manner to facilitate the comprehension and understanding of the intended audience.

  • Ability to use own judgment and creative skills to interpret programs, policies, and other initiatives of high interest for internal and external audiences.

  • Must have a high degree of initiative, creativity, and professional skill.

The Investigative Psychology Program Specialist is a subject matter expert (SME) and activities may include: o Perform various quantitative and qualitative research duties. Conduct data collection, research and analysis using a variety of analytical tools. o Assist operational psychologists in designing tools to capture critical information to be incorporated into investigative, operational and analytic methodology. o Conduct extensive literature reviews and analyses to assist AFOSI in keeping up with current research in the field of investigative and forensic psychology, sexual assault, crimes against children, suicides/homicides, investigative interviewing and other specialized interview techniques, and credibility assessment. o Provide support to criminal investigations through expert case consultation, document reviews, psychological testing, case management, screening assessments, and reviews/assessments of video/recorded interviews of subjects, victims and witnesses. Conduct detailed psychological autopsies. o Provide direct consultation to military law enforcement, security, and counterintelligence operations and investigations, including threat assessment, risk assessment, case reviews, investigative interviewing, interviewing of child victims and witnesses.
