Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker school with campuses in Bethesda, Maryland, and Washington, DC, seeks an editorial director for the Office of Communications. The editorial director serves as the managing editor of Sidwell Friends Magazine and is responsible for the writing, editing, and production of the magazine and other publications (print and electronic). The editorial director maintains the Schools writing style and ensures the stylistic consistency of all School digital and print materials.

He/she conceptualizes news and story ideas for Sidwell Friends Magazine and the news section of the website; works with and interviews alumni, faculty, students, and other community members for feature stories and columns; and establishes editorial and production policies and procedures. The editorial director must exercise excellent judgement in terms of developing key storylines that advance the Schools mission, demonstrating strong journalistic integrity with the ability to meet deadlines. He/she must be detail-oriented and work collaboratively with other creative professionals including designers, printers, writers and photographers in order to produce well-executed publications.

This position reports directly to the Chief Communications Officer and closely collaborates with other members of the Communications staff, as well as with colleagues in Admissions, School Advancement, and elsewhere within the School community. The successful candidate will act as a primary proofreader for the office and serve as deputy to the Chief Communications Officer, assuming responsibility for office operations in the absence of the CCO. The position is located on the Schools DC campus.

A bachelors degree in a relevant field is required (masters preferred) with 7-10 years of senior-level experience in writing, editing, and production for print and digital publications. Special consideration will be given to experience in education or with non-profits. Basic photography skills and knowledge of design and layout principles are also necessary, as are a sense of humor, a commitment to excellence, the ability to meet deadlines, and an appreciation for the Quaker values underlying the School.

VIEW JOBS 10/10/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-01-08T00:00 GENERAL PURPOSE The Director of Communications is the senior communications executive for the association. This position reports to the Executive Director and will work collaboratively with senior leadership to develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies to broaden the impact of NGAs programs, and oversee organizational messaging and services, while managing the Communications Division. The director is responsible for translating information into messaging that is clear, consistent and effective for all internal and external stakeholders, by applying state-of-the-art principles and practices that epitomize world-class communication. In addition, the position will provide communications support for NGAs internal functions and departments, including proactively developing communications messages, plans and tools for Governors, and support the visibility of the Governors and the Association. ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES * Leads the communications, marketing and branding efforts for NGA. Oversees the development and implementation of the associations communication strategic plan, annual budget, and expand and refine key media messages for NGA; * Oversees the development, refinement and management of the associations primary communications vehicles, including websites, social media, press releases and publications, such as the annual report and print collateral; * Collaborates with stakeholders to support NGAs brand and ensure consistency of message and competitive positioning. Identifies significant media and public policy issues that can be leveraged to support the Governors, and create and implement plans to optimize them; * Oversees organizational response to media inquiries. Counsels Executive Management, Executive Committee, and other stakeholders on critical communication messages and issues; works with Senior Leadership to anticipate and respond to urgent communication issues; manages crisis communication; * Tracks organizational accomplishments, develops content for campaign letters, crafts press releases and public service announcements, when necessary. Represents NGA at media/public relation events; * Develops and manages internal association wide communication processes, interdepartmental relationships, and other functions that support the goals and objectives of the Communications Division; * Develops strong relationships with NGAs Governors and staff to understand their public relations needs and perspectives; * Serves as a member of the senior management team; and * May perform other duties and responsibilities as required. NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS Extensive contact with media representatives and communications executives from states. Senior management levels within states, corporations, foundations, financial institutions, federal agencies, trade associations and national nonprofit organizations for the purpose of exchanging information. Senior managers and functional peers in NGA for the purpose of supporting public relations efforts. TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS Bachelors degree (advanced degree preferred) in journalism, public relations, communications or a related discipline from an accredited four-year college or university, with a minimum of 8 -10 years of relevant experience involving demonstrated abilities in communications, public relations and marketing; or any combination of training, education and experience which provides the following knowledge abilities and skills: * At least 5 years experience in a management/leadership role with significant responsibility for the areas outlined above; * Understanding of state priorities and a broad range of experience in programmatic activities, or nonprofit and experience with government funding preferred; * Dynamic leader with a strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes, individually and collaboratively with others; * Applied knowledge and experience in working with online communications and social media, with knowledge of effective branding strategies and plans for implementation; * Demonstrated experience in developing systems and processes for the efficient management of a team; * Demonstrated skills at coordination of association objectives through multiple divisions and multiple layers in an organization; * Strong people manager who can lead, inspire, and direct the activities of a team of communications/public relations professionals; * Superior verbal and written communications skills a must, with the ability to tailor for various purposes, such as news releases, executive speeches and presentations, video scripts, articles and more; * Self-directed, action-oriented, forward-thinking, strategic and creative individual with high ethical standards; * Superior attention to detail/organization and a clear philosophy/approach to using communications to drive results; * Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a fast-paced environment; * Demonstrated success in positioning/achieving favored visibility for organizations and their thought leaders; and * Ability and willingness to travel up to 20%.
