SUMMARY:
The editor is responsible for overseeing, creating, and curating content for UR Now, a digital original news site that will also form the basis of a weekly email digest of news and information about the University of Richmond. The editor is responsible for the quality, quantity, and strategic value of content generated by the UR Now team, as well as the quality of the website and the email.
The editor reports to and works in partnership with the AVP for Communications and Media Relations and will supervise a senior digital content specialist and freelancers, while collaborating closely with University Communications colleagues to create and manage news and storytelling content creation, editing, and distribution. The editor leads UR Now planning and content meetings, supervises the production process, edits and writes content, and manages the posting of content to the web and distribution of the email associated with the publication.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide Vision and Leadership for UR Now
In partnership with senior leadership, create an engaging and strategically focused news site and affiliated weekly email that advances the national reputation and elevates the academic excellence of the University of Richmond as a top liberal arts university. Provide exceptional storytelling through written and visual means. Work with University Communications colleagues to analyze user data, analytics and patterns, and to increase reader engagement and retention.
Oversee, Write, Review, and Edit Content
Provide editorial oversight for content that will include written narratives, compelling photographs, and videos, information graphics, and digital interactive features produced to inform broad audiences and positively influence the way communities think about and interact with the University of Richmond. Work with University Communications colleagues and campus partners to identify, create, produce, edit, publish, and cross-promote engaging content daily and through the weekly email. Identify and manage a stable of freelancers.
Manage Publication Schedule
Manage the publication schedule to ensure fresh content on a daily basis to the news site and to curate content for the weekly email. Identify content that is linked to and aligns with the University's strategic plan and institutional priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Excellent skills in balancing storytelling with marketing the University
Substantial experience researching, writing, and editing stories that are journalistic in style, and an ability to make the content engaging within the parameters of a university's broader communications
Strong interviewing skills
Strong editorial innovation and creativity
Solid project-management experience, including the ability to set and enforce deadlines, manage complex editorial or digital projects, and manage a project timeline.
A strong understanding of the responsibilities of the division to tell the University's story in an engaging manner
Proven experience as managing editor for print and/or digital publications, including exercising news judgment
Demonstrated experience creating and curating content for digital channels
Demonstrated experience in and strong knowledge of creating a vision for content, including writing, editing, and managing
A broad base of knowledge and experience to deal with the variety of complex topics that the news site content covers
An understanding of how to work effectively with and how to integrate a university's people, programs, resources, and strategic goals into the news
Demonstrated ability to effectively work with campus
Strong interpersonal skills and a highly professional presentation
Ability to work independently at a consistently high level of productivity and accuracy
Familiarity with podcasting and video
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, mass communications, English, marketing, or a related
5+ years of significant experience in journalism, public relations, marketing communications, or a related
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at UR.

Full-time, exempt position

Friday, 8:30 a.m.
5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week
SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 8 (Hiring Range $64,210.00 to $85,072.00 annually)
