The Educational/Developmental Assistant (EDA) position serves as a lead trainer in the home setting, by providing specialized training to individuals to maximize independence in a variety of skill areas which may include: self-care, meal preparation, dining, domestic, kitchen skills, texturizing of food, meal planning, grocery shopping, utilizing/cleaning, and maintaining appliances and kitchen equipment, communication, socialization and money management. Job responsibilities include the following:

• Assist Teachers with assessing strengths, needs, and preferences of individuals to facilitate development of training objectives and activities.

• Ensures that training programs are conducted properly and that data is accurately and consistently documented.

• Monitors training programs

• Provides input and recommendations to address ongoing progress and program development

• Maintain records of time/data on work or skills, performed by the individuals

• Serves as a mentor for support staff in the home setting    

Work Hours: 7:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m., Mon. - Fri.

Qualified candidates must document on the application that they clearly possess all of the following:

• Considerable knowledge of fundamental principles, verbal and written instructions; instructional techniques/methodologies, data collection systems, and methods of habilitation.

• Knowledge of the practical application of behavioral programming techniques

• Ability to work independently with minimal directives

• Ability to problem solve and communicate effectively with other staff

• Ability to instruct; to establish rapport and relate to population served, their families and

variety of service disciplines (occupational therapist, speech/language pathologist, dieticians, social workers, psychologist, nurses, medical professionals and home managers).

• Ability to evaluate the individual's progress

• Ability to learn and follow OSHA and/or sanitation/safety guidelines

• Communicate effectively in oral and written form

• Basic knowledge of food preparation and handling.

Management Preferences:

• High School diploma

• Two years minimum experience providing direct services to people with developmental disability in health care or a related area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Other: Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching, Reaching, Standing, Walking, Pushing, Pulling, Lifting, Fingering, Grasping, Feeling, Talking, Hearing, Repetitive Motions, Visual Acuity, Inside and Outside Activities. Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience". High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience working with students in an educational environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
