Salary Range: $19.8400 - $30.5000 /hour. Actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, work experience, skill level, and education.

The Emergency Care Technician (ECT) works directly under the supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in giving emergency care to patients. The ECT performs selected technical procedures and tasks and assists physicians and nurses in direct patient care. The ECT will take and record clinical measures, collect specimens, provide transportation, maintain equipment and supplies as well as participate in a safe patient care environment. The ECT projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance, and conduct, and supports the ED mission. The ECT participates in the continuous quality improvement process, and maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventative maintenance.

Job Specific Essential Functions:

The ECT is able to perform the following interventions as delegated by the RN/MD:

  • Electrode application

  • Restraint application

  • 12-lead EKG

  • Removal of Foley catheter

  • Splint application

  • Crutch/cane training

  • Holding patient for Lumbar Puncture procedure

  • Visual acuity examination

The ECT may perform other duties as assigned and described within their scope of practice. ECT's with additional competencies may perform phlebotomy and accucheck. The ECT may perform the role of Lobby Facilitator. The Lobby Facilitator performs the above roles, and in addition assists the triage nurse by performing first aid duties, and acts as a liaison between the ED team, patients, and their families. The Lobby Facilitator's primary goal is to reduce the number of patients who leave without treatment. Additionally the ECT/Lobby Facilitator:

  • Assists the RN in maintaining a safe patient care environment.

  • Demonstrates competence and sensitivity in assisting with the care of patients and families from diverse multicultural origins.

Education, Training, and Experience:

Required:

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or completion of EMT Course, or 2 Semesters of RN school. BLS/CPR Certification.

Preferred:

  • Recent experience as an EMT, patient care assistant or military corpsman.

Skills or Other Qualifications:

Required:

  • Demonstrated clinical proficiency. BLS required. Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, organizational ability, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measure and infection control, ability to follow instructions.

Preferred:

  • Additional skills and knowledge of equipment may be required.

License and Certifications:

Required:

  • Current EMT Certification or completion of 2 Semesters of RN School

  • Current BLS Certification

Preferred:

  • Phlebotomy Certification
