Responsibilities

Economic Assistants collect prices and related statistical data on a wide variety of commodities, services, and housing for the BLS Consumer Price Index. Duties include, but are not limited to: 1.

Visiting retail and service establishments such as department stores, supermarkets, medical offices and hotels to collect retail price data. A limited amount of data is collected by telephone/fax. 2. Contacting homeowners, renters, and apartment management companies by personal visit to neighborhoods and follow up telephone interviews. 3.

Collecting and entering data on a hand held computer. 4. Obtaining voluntary cooperation from survey respondents.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet qualifications, legal and regulatory requirements for the position by closing date of this announcement.

GS-05: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level.

Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the work of the position being filled which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Examples of qualifying experience include: collecting, compiling, verifying, analyzing or reporting data dealing with pricing of goods and services. Experience in retail environments, such as clerks in large grocery stores and associates in large retail outlets; specific knowledge of a wide variety of assorted products and or service(s) offered by an outlet; real estate experience in selling and public outreach, e.g., open house showings; experience selling items door to door or at house parties. Please provide sufficient narrative in your resume to qualify for such specialized experience as described above.

Education

Education substitution: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in economics, or 24 semester hours of courses in subjects such as business law, statistics, algebra, precalculus, calculus, or economics. Equivalent combination of education and experience are qualifying.

AP's will place phone calls to check on news stories, to use internet and other sources to follow up or gain insight for use in reporting news stories. Additionally, answer telephones in a polite and helpful fashion. Recognize the urgency of telephone calls (immediate, routine, can wait) Answer listener questions, Screen calls from public relations firms, take messages for reporters. Refer complaints to management; take in detailed news tips and forward immediately to the desk. Call back people you have promised to help. MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A college degree, with a concentration in broadcast journalism is preferred. Hands-on internships or experience at a college radio station is required. Must be familiar with digital audio editing techniques. KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS: Must follow news on a regular basis, have a working knowledge of the basic facts of topical news stories and demonstrate 'news judgement'. Assistant producers must be familiar with digital audio editing techniques. Must be familiar with basic technical standards including level noise and clarity of sound. Must be able to write clearly and juggle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment. COMPLEXITY OF WORK: The work of assistant producers is very routine, but the sheer volume of work and competing priorities may be daunting for new employees. Must have the capcity to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. There is a high volume of work and AP's are required to prioritize tasks. Much of work must be performed on very short deadlines. There is a low tolerance for errors. Answering listener inquires may require determination and ingenuity. INTERNAL/EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: Assistant producers take much of their direction from the editor on the desk, who helps determine priorities for audio to be used on the air. Assistant producers work closely with editors, writers, reporters and anchors. When answering the phone, assistant producers represent the radio station to listeners and callers, and a must project a professional and unhurried image to callers. DECISION-MAKING FOR RESULTS: The work of the assistant producers is highly structured and subject to constant review.
