This is a three-year term limited position with strong possibility of extension in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science whose primary responsibilities will be to assist in the production of marketing and communications material for the Electrical and Computer Engineering Division.
The successful candidate will work with a high degree of autonomy to produce communications material, including web content, printed material, and other communications material for recruitment and general marketing (ie, posters, flyers, kiosks). Of primary importance is the ability to write interesting prose related to technical material, and a good instinct for visual presentation of the material. The candidate will assist the departmental communications manager in related activities as needed.
Write stories that highlight the research, activities, and accomplishments of faculty, students, alumni, and the division
Edit content for style and organization; proofread for typographical errors; re-purpose and summarize material for use across a variety of communications channels.
Develop, maintain, and refresh content for the Division's websites and within the building (kiosks and tack boards).
Produce and/or assist with communications collateral (e.g., brochures, fact sheets, posters, newsletters, reports, presentations, and other promotional items as needed) that effectively describe and promote the Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan.
Develop and publish material through a variety of social media channels.
Take photographs and occasional video footage at Division events and student defenses.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education
1-2 years of experience in the areas of marketing and communications
Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of editing and writing
Excellent writing skills
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on a team and to exercise diplomacy in working with donors and other professionals
Ability to manage competing deadlines
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively through a variety of mediums
Experience with basic office and publishing tools such as Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, and InDesign
A high degree of familiarity with social media platforms and web tools such as WordPress.
Ability to translate highly technical subject matter to the general public
Familiarity with emerging web practices and their applications in an academic setting
Ability to create basic videos
Evidence of creativity and novel ideas, and the desire to actively seek out and learn new modes of communication
Knowledge of College of Engineering and University of Michigan policies and procedures; online and hard copy portfolio.
