Job Title: Adapted Curriculum Instructional Literacy Coach

Salary Schedule: Certified Teacher Salary Scale + Local Supplement

Reports To: Adapted Curriculum Specialist in Collaboration with School Administrators

Position Summary

This position serves as a teacher leader and coach in implementing the NC Extended Content Standards and specially designed instruction by establishing trusting and collaborative partnerships with EC Adapted Curriculum Teachers. The ECAC Literacy Coach is primarily responsible for supporting and building the capacity of ECAC Teachers and Teacher Assistants to enable students to develop emerging and functional literacy skills.

Essential Duties

  • Increase ECAC teacher capacity to create safe, inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments.

  • Supporting new and meaningful learning activities and social interactions through coaching, modeling, and job-embedded professional development.

  • Assists parents and schools in successfully transitioning students new to the district into appropriate services and programs by developing a continuation of services plan.

  • Works collaboratively with EC adapted curriculum teachers to increase their capacity to design rigorous instruction aligned with IEP goals and extended content standards.

  • Design and provide professional development aligned with structured teaching (including physical organization/visual boundaries in the classroom, schedules, routines, work systems, and task organization) and elements of applied behavior analysis (including discrete trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, pivotal response treatment, token economy, and contingent observation).

  • Collaborate with CHCCS Instructional Services Division in providing professional development in specially designed instruction and classroom management.

  • Collaborate with school administration to assess and prioritize teachers' support needs.

  • Organize and follow a consistent coaching calendar at each assigned school to support each teacher during the year, perform walk-throughs and perform fidelity checks in adapted curriculum classrooms.

  • Facilitate PLCs and provide opportunities for peer reflection, collaboration, and coaching about student access to and progress in the general curriculum and IEP goal progress.

  • Maintain current and professional expertise in special education, individualized educational program implementation

  • Lead PLCs that enable teachers to define what it means to presume competence and design instruction to foster emergent literacy skills and functional reading for students in the adapted curriculum classroom including using systematic prompting and feedback in small group instruction in the ECAC classroom.

  • Assist ECAC teachers in identifying barriers to literacy learning, writing that exist for individual students and design ways to remove these barriers;

  • Design coaching cycles and embed professional development for teachers in evidence-based ways to instruct students with significant cognitive disabilities in phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency and written expression.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • NC Teaching License in special education;

  • Bachelor's degree in special education, psychology, related services, or a related field; license in adapted curriculum preferred.

  • 5 to 7 years of experience working with exceptional children either as a teacher or in an administrative capacity; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of K-12 Extended Content standards and disciplinary literacy.

  • Evidence of understanding characteristics of adult learners.

  • Highly skilled in collaboration with diverse populations of educators & students.

  • Such alternatives to the above as the Board finds appropriate and acceptable.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.

  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs.

  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on the telephone.
