If so, we invite you to join our dedicated team as a Building Maintenance Specialist for the eastern side hatcheries at Canyon Creek, Tonto Creek, Silver Creek, Cold Springs Ranch and the Phoenix HQ fish health lab. The Eastern Hatcheries Maintenance Specialist serves as the representative for building maintenance activities at Canyon Creek Hatchery, Tonto Creek Hatchery, Silver Creek Hatchery, and Cold Springs Ranch. The position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all buildings and related utility service systems which can include remodeling and major construction activities involving electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, masonry, motorized equipment use, electrical, heating and cooling.

Schedules preventive maintenance programs, coordinating needs assessments with hatchery managers, maintaining records, performing annual inspections at the facilities and assisting with maintenance activities throughout the entire Statewide Hatchery System. This position is also responsible for fish culture and transport duties under direction of supervisor and hatchery managers. The position requires the employee to live on-site in state provided housing.

Job Duties:

Major responsibilities will include:

  • Performs, directs, and leads major to difficult tasks in maintenance, repair, remodeling, and new general construction projects (i.e., carpentry, concrete/masonry work, roofing, septic, plumbing, fabrication, minor electrical (e.g. replace lights and ceiling fans, ect.), painting, drywall, general woodwork, mechanical, welding, performs minor routine maintenance on hatchery program vehicles and equipment. Has the authority to inspect, determine, recommend and implement approved repairs at hatchery facilities buildings and structures. Plan and implement grounds keeping activities

  • Assure all OSHA safety rules, National and Local building codes are compiled with and recommends operating budgets and controlling expenditures. Responsible for all emergency maintenance as needed. Devises and prioritizes work schedules for current and future projects, inspects all work areas at Fish Hatcheries to determine any problems and hazards to work functions and takes appropriate reaction to resolve issues, reviews and interprets blueprints and sketches pertaining to buildings and associated utilities by applying National and Local building codes.

  • Acquire building materials and hatchery supplies, acquire specialty services as needed to complete maintenance or repairs, and provide logistical assistance to other hatchery facilities as necessary. Contact contractors and vendors to obtain bids/estimates for specialty services or supplies. Maintain detailed records of facilities maintenance for each structure or improvement.

  • Fish culture tasks that include learning to feed and care for live fish and interpret feed charts; learn to treat fish with therapeutic chemicals as necessary; clean rearing ponds, tanks, and raceways, adjust water flows, remove dead fish; and check water quality and quantity within the hatchery. Learns to capture, load, transport, and stock live fish into lakes, streams, and reservoirs. In addition to assisting with fish culture duties this position is responsible for making fish culture related decisions and taking action in the absence of a Regional Hatchery Supervisor, Hatchery Manager, or Wildlife Specialist; during busy stocking and fish production seasons.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

The candidate must have knowledge of/in: basic trades such as carpentry, masonry, minor electrical and plumbing, welding, painting, drywall, fabrication, roofing, and septic and; knowledge of the tools and equipment, methods, and practices, used in the above-mentioned trades and applicable OSHA safety requirements as well as application of National/State/local building codes and; knowledge of general landscaping and groundskeeping techniques and; knowledge of minor routine vehicle maintenance procedures; knowledge to review and interpret blueprints and designs.

Candidate must be skilled to efficiently perform basic maintenance and repair on a variety of hatchery-related infrastructure and vehicles using appropriate tools and equipment. Skill in evaluating problems and solving the using limited assistance; lift and carry 50 pounds or more; sometimes for extended periods of time.

The candidate must be able to: problem solving abilities; Ability to learn quickly; Ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relations; Ability to make decisions using limited information; Ability to operate a diverse variety of vehicles (ATVs, stocking trucks, forklift, backhoe, snowplow, bobcat, backhoe, grader, etc), and equipment/machinery (power tools and pneumatic tools, welders, carpentry and construction-related tools) for facilities maintenance and hatchery operations; Ability to learn and apply basic and advanced aquaculture techniques; Ability to work alone and instruct others as needed for assistance; Ability to work self-supervised and work varied hours to accomplish important tasks.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Employment is contingent upon completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination and the agency's ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.

Position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid, state-issued commercial driver's license (Class A) appropriate to the assignment with air brakes and tanker endorsement (must be obtained within 6 months of appointment). This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver's license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver's license record checks.

The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
