Job Summary

Harris-Stowe State University has an opening in its state-of-the-art Early Childhood Development/Parenting Education Center and seeks to fill the position of Lead Infant Teacher. Lead teachers will provide developmentally appropriate environments for infants, toddlers, or mixed age groupings and work with assistants to create a comprehensive program to enhance development and learning in all children. Lead teachers will model, for others, ways of establishing positive relationships with children and families to better understand children's needs, interests, and abilities and demonstrate use of assessments to document children's progress.

Essential Functions

  • Supervise and directly interact with children in a warm and positive manner.

  • Create, support, and maintain a physically and psychologically safe environment that nurtures and facilitates the cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development of all children.

  • Encourage children's natural instincts, through child-centered activities, opportunities, and experiences, to investigate, ask questions, and develop critical thinking skills.

Prepare weekly lesson plans that follow a structured daily schedule

  • Encourage children to explore materials and share ideas.

  • Apply an understanding of developmental stages in observing children and using observations in program planning.

Document children's progress and share with parents via parent/teacher conferences.

Model positive and correct use of the English language.

  • Listen to children and respond appropriately to their communication efforts.

  • Demonstrate respect for children at all times.

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and uncluttered classroom at all times.

  • Participate in the supervision and evaluation of the classroom team.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • BS Degree Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Sociology

  • Minimum of two years' experience in a child development center working with assigned age group

  • First Aid/CPR trained and certified

  • Correct use of the English language

  • Must be able to work with parents and families of diverse cultures and structures

  • Proficient in use of technology

Physical Requirements

Successful candidates must have the ability to travel frequently from one site to another. Should have adequate sight to engage in word processing, view screens, the ability to climbing stairs, ability to sit for extended periods of time in meetings and observations, etc. Must be capable of lifting at least 15 pounds.
