Required qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). One year of full-time experience in a college or university setting in one or more of the following areas: academic advising, transfer advising, counseling, teaching, student programming/activities, orientation, student services, or enrollment/retention areas (Related student work experience may be considered) Experience conducting presentations including facilitating discussions. Experience coordinating programs and/or events.

Preferred qualifications:

Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling, or a related discipline. Academic advising experience in a college or university setting.

Experience teaching new student seminars or student-development related courses. Experience interacting with a diverse student population in an academic environment.

Brief Description:

The DUE Academic Advisement position provides individual academic advising to SBU students. The incumbent is an active leader and participant in assisting with the orientation and registration process, planning activities and events throughout the year, developing and implementing advising strategies for academic success for all students, and building connections with faculty, staff, and student constituents. In addition, the incumbent teaches the

Introduction to Stony Brook seminar course. This position provides a significant link to students' transition to SBU with the goal to strengthen student engagement and retention.

The incumbent must possess: outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving. Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.

  • Academic Advisement: Provide high quality, pro-active academic advising in individual and group settings on an ongoing basis throughout the students SBU career, including regular communication about courses, majors, degree requirements, and policies and procedures.

    Monitor course enrollment and academic progress. Active support, follow-up and success strategies to undergraduate students. Serve as a general walk-in academic advisor as needed.

  • Program Development and Event Planning: Participate in initiating, planning, and developing events and activities which build community and support academic success.

    Coordinate programming initiatives, including logistics, planning, and partnering with any campus departments. May oversee marketing: social media, print, website, calendar, additional digital media, etc. May oversee student assistants, serve on training committees. Assist with administrative tasks for programming, special initiatives, etc.

  • Orientation and Registration: Assist in the coordination and implementation of orientation sessions.

    Coordinate the registration of new students. Collaborate with the Registrar, New Student Programs office, and all specialized advising programs in registering new students. Participate in the planning of new student orientation and opening week programs including the development, planning, and implementation of various activities.

  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission, including participation in various programs such as training/staff development, campus events, and university-wide committees.

Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
